Pretty divergent opinions. Kiper had him as his #2 receiver behind Hunter. McShay and the Ringer had him behind Hunter, McMillan, and Egbuka. PFF had him 4th behind those three and Burden.

Re: Round 1 - Matthew Golden
From what I've seen he has a high floor. I would very surprised if he was a total bust. To me it's more a question whether he's really really good or just solid.

Maybe if his name was Denise instead of Dennis.

Re: Round 1 - Matthew Golden
The Watson household seems to be taking the news well lol
Christian Watson’s brother apparently got the news before Packers president and CEO Mark Murphy announced the first-round pick, as Watson rushed to say, “These idiots, man,” before the selection. He followed it up with, “They don’t want to win, man.”
After sitting in silence for a pregnant pause following the selection of Texas receiver Matthew Golden, Wajid Wajed responded, “It is what it is. More power to the young man, but I’m going to tell you right now: They deserve whatever they get. They deserve whatever they get.”

I see no reason he can’t be Xavier Worthy level as a rookie. Worthy was 75/1014/5 as a junior at Texas, Golden was 58/987/9. Worthy as a rookie was 59/636/6 at KC.

Is he aware that Christian tore his ACL in Week 17 last year and both he and Doubs are in the last year of their deals? The Packers clearly value Watson but he's literally not going to be on the field for a huge chunk of next season. I don't know why his dad has to be such a weirdo.

Its kind of funny from a fan perspective, but probably a lot of frustration from having him going from 9 TDs as a rookie, to having his targets drop significantly last year then to being out for the first month of his contract year. Add in that his targets will go down they just saw his son's potential earnings drop by $30m on the next contract over the past year. I would have some pent up frustration as well.

I don't blame Watson's father. He knows Golden could take his job permanently. I would stick up for my son too. Even if Golden doesn't pan out it was the right move at the time. The only guy I would have considered over Golden that was drafted between 24-32 is James Pearce. Both Golden and Pearce have the same questions of size. If either can overcome it they will be great players in this league.

Kiper
The first receiver in Round 1 for the Packers since 2002! I love this pick. I remember watching Golden in 2023, when he was still at Houston. His consistency continued at Texas last season; he runs great routes and is a big-play threat with 4.29 speed. Receiver was a huge need for the Packers (and has been for a while). They have good pass catchers in Jayden Reed, Romeo Doubs and Christian Watson, but none of them are no-doubt WR1 options. Golden can be that.
And wait, it gets better. I ranked Golden 16th overall. He was my second-ranked receiver in the class behind Travis Hunter, yet we saw Tetairoa McMillan and Emeka Egbuka go before him. This is a really nice marriage of value, need and upside. What a night for the host city.
I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

How dare they make a winning move because they don't want to win

Why is your worth tied to your son’s value? That energy is weird. I get being supportive, but turning moves the front office makes into a personal slight is exhausting.
Also… how many games has Watson actually played and finished? The guy flashes elite traits, but he’s been more of a rumor than a reliable WR1. Availability matters. You can’t build a passing game around someone who’s on the sideline every other week.
Golden might not be a fan favorite pick today, but investing in consistency and durability isn’t exactly a bad move.

Reaction to the pick from fans seems to be overwhelmingly positive. Not 100% of course (what pick is?) but very positive.

No, I agree. I do that thing where I read a few negative reactions from fans, and that clouds the overwhelmingly positive response. In all honesty (and most of us know this), no one knows how Golden will fit in until the pads go on. And even then it can take a few years (Davante Adams).
I'm happy they are investing in more tools for LaFleur and weapons for Love. At least they can't say they haven't tried.
Also, I'm more defensive overall because I'm hyped that the draft is in GB and **** any haters.

Everybody wants to go to heaven but nobody wants to die.

yeah, not saying his dad feelings are valid or that he isn't an idiot for doing it on a podcast. I'm just saying it is a dad frustrated seeing his son get passed up at work. You see it a lot in sports where dads spend 20 years taking them to practice, coaching them either formally at home or on a team and feel their sons success is their success. Thats definitely not me (my kid will never be burdened with pro atheltes genes) but I see it a lot even at the grade school level. so not really shocking seeing a dad pissed his son got pushed to the side.

When he catches a ball inside the 10 I'll say "(down) AND GOLLLLLLLL-den" you can use that one if you want Chones.

Hard to get mad at a dad for a hot take. But with his son out for most of the year, Reed taking a step back last year, Doubs with concussion concerns, we definitely needed to add a WR. Doubs and Watson both free agents after next season.

Add in Wicks experiencing the yips over an early season succession of drops, the WRs didn't quite live up to pre-season expectations(which may have been unrealistic anyway).
