I'm not sure I agree on Nixon. He played a lot of boundary CB last season.

I know there were plenty of rumors that this could happen going into this offseason. But that ship seemed to have sailed by now, especially with some of the recent news that they were working on a restructured contract.

Reading the tea leaves, it appears that Jaire wasn't willing to play ball on a contract restructure and found out Gute wasn't bluffing about cutting him this late into the offseason.

I'm assuming the value/player just wasn't there.

We just got worse today and our Super Bowl chances diminished. Pretty sad something couldn’t get worked out. Going to miss that crazy MFer too.

If he wasn't willing to take less then what can we do. You can't pay a guy $17m who isn't likely to play 75% of the games that season. As good as he is, that just wouldn't work for me.

On the one hand, Jaire was way overpaid for his part-time production over 3 of the past 4 seasons.

On the other hand, letting a talented CB already under contract, in a room that is not exactly overflowing with talent, go does not seem like a move that a team intent on making a serious run would make.

Oh well, it frees up money to sign other, younger guys and that is the secret sauce that allows Green Bay to remain both in the mix and the youngest or among the youngest teams in the NFL most years.

GB hoping some of these guys toward the back of the roster emerge: King, Robinson, Herring, Hadden, Baldwin.

Can someone explain why just keeping him wasn't a possibility?? Fears of toxic behavior?

Having that much money tied up in a malcontent who plays 7 games a year.

Yeah pretty much. His personality has grown larger than his talent and availability I guess in the easy way to put it. The weird captain thing he pulled is still crazy to me. Takes a real egomaniac to think undermining the head coach is ever just all fun and games.

The Packers can sell this as addition by subtraction because the D looked good without him last year and they added Hobbs in FA. I’m not sure I agree but I’m hoping this move leads to something bigger. I’m with MD, I want Hendrickson at all costs.

Is Ramsey any good any more? Dolphins are looking to move him. I'm not straight on all of the cap stuff but I believe we'd only be on the hook for his $10 million salary and the Dolphins eat everything else? And he has nothing guaranteed beyond this season I believe.

Jaire will sign an incentive laden deal, which is what the Packers were offering. He just didn't want to take it from us.

FWIW Carrington Vallentine was the 27th best cover corner last season by PFF. We've been hearing the coaching staff rave about him the last two off-seasons, so maybe they really believe in his ability to step into a greater role. No interest in bringing an even bigger diva (Ramsey) here.

Sucks to lose Jaire but even with a restructured incentive laden deal he very likely would have been gone next offseason anyways. So we trade one year of diminished superbowl hopes for better cap management and player development for the future.

I think Hadden has a shot to see the field this year.

Unless Hendrickson is in play this makes zero sense to me.

Like woot we opened up cap space we didn't need this year

I think what it boiled down to is that while we would have paid him more to play here this year than anywhere else, that would have been it for him. No way we keep him beyond that.

Now he can go audition for his next contract with a different team. No doubt he will be an all pro this year, get paid again, and then play part time after that.

Dude has played so little the last 3 years not sure what everyone thinks we're missing here.

Bet Zach Tom and Jenkins deals get done soon.

Looking ahead to next years free agent CB class and it looks pretty barren like this off-season (pending any cap casualties next year). DaRon Bland could be interesting, but we're probably looking at another 1st round CB taken in the draft next April.

I believe they can use some of this years cap space when giving Tom and Jenkins (and maybe Quay) new deals. Russ Ball does a hell of a job, it's going to suck when he retires (he's 65). As he's moved up the ladder I imagine he has delegated and they will have someone ready to take his position when he's done.
