Yuck:

WesHod:
Aaron Rodgers held out of practice with foot sprain

WesHod:
MM: Rodgers' foot sprain happened this morning. MM's choice. Being smart.

Don't like to hear that, but I'm sure it's no big deal.

I don't know, man. A preseason win over the Chiefs would really send this team in the right direction.

I thought the starters sitting Thursday was basically a forgone conclusion, foot sprain or no.

It basically is. The backups have been getting the reps in practice, the starters have been scout team.

Hey the Bucks goal is the # 8 seed. The Packers made the playoffs as the lowest seed. Lots of similarities between the two franchises.

Yep. And the Packers have shown the Bucks that it is possible to win it all as a bottom seed. That #8 seed for the Bucks could be something special, just like the #6 was for the Pack. :D

Speaking of the preseason, something i never really thought deeply about, but now i wonder a bit about is why pretty much all teams use the third preseason game as the one to play their starters for a half or longer instead of doing that in the last preseason game?

The injury aspect shouldn't matter either way given someone could get injured just as easily in the third game as the last one. Is it mainly to get one long and last look at the guys fighting for a roster spot?

The injury aspect matters a little bit, as you miss one less game with minor injuries if you get injured in week three.

I think it's mostly what you said, though. Many of the guys competing for roster spots haven't been around for too long, so the clearest picture is probably going to be available when they've been around your coaching for as long as possible before you have to make a decision. Some guys make big improvements over that month of preseason, I guess?

4. I talk about Jermichael Finley quite a bit and I am not going to go into extreme detail about what this amazing player brings to the table. But what I am going to say is that if he and Aaron Rodgers both stay healthy this year, they will be the most dominant quarterback/receiver tandem in the league. The only other tandem I would consider is Philip Rivers and Antonio Gates. But Finley is on the cusp of surpassing Gates. Who in the league can cover him? Think it over. Rodgers to Finley is unstoppable.

Like I said earlier, if Finley plays 16 games, I'll be very surprised if he doesn't lead the team in targets. He's by far the biggest offensive mismatch on the roster. Just stay healthy dammit.

Normally, I like to go against the idea of a Super Bowl champ's return to the game. That team is the target of every team that didn't go to the Super Bowl, and someone usually succeeds in knocking out the champs.

But I can see the Green Bay Packers back in the Super Bowl. On paper, how can you not support the Packers winning the NFC? Aaron Rodgers looks as good as -- if not better than -- he did last season. The Packers' depth is better: 15 players are coming off the injured reserve list.

In 2010, the Packers did it the hard way, making the playoffs as a wild card and then getting hot. This year, they should win the NFC North and would get home games during the playoffs, which could make their path to the Super Bowl a little easier.

After the Super Bowl, I said the Packers have the type of youth and talent to have a six-year span during which they could take three serious runs at the Super Bowl. The more you think about this year, though, why not think back-to-back NFC titles?

The last team to repeat as the Super Bowl champ was the Patriots. Like the Patriots, the Packers have the right quarterback in Rodgers. They have plenty of offensive weapons, and you could argue that the Packers have a little more offense than the Patriots' Super Bowl teams. Dom Capers does a great job with the Packers' defense, and he has ways for covering if the team is short a defensive end or a pass-rushing linebacker.

This year's Green Bay team has the answers to questions about last year's team. When Ryan Grant was hurt, general manager Ted Thompson was criticized for not trading to get Marshawn Lynch. Instead, Thompson patiently waited for James Starks to get healthy late in the season. This year, the Packers have Grant and Starks.

The offensive line has young, developing players who can help, but it also looks deep and solid. Letting Cullen Jenkins go was debatable, but Thompson has earned the benefit of the doubt. No one can doubt coach Mike McCarthy.

During the preseason, he's letting Rodgers try out some no-huddle series, and the Packers look unstoppable in the no-huddle.

I can't bet against the Packers this year in the NFC. The best I can do is say that maybe an AFC team such as the Patriots might beat them in the Super Bowl.

It IS extremely hard to repeat. Everyone does gun for the champs. Some guys get complacent after they get a ring. Some guys get too full of themselves. But our team is absolutely loaded. You take the champs and add Finley, Burnett, Grant plus young guys like Shields will get even better. I wouldn't bet against a repeat.

If I had a crystal ball that told me Finley would stay healthy and play in all 16 regular season games and the playoffs and the crystal didn't tell me anything else, I would bet the house Rodgers wins MVP and we at least repeat as NFC Champs.
