Yes, it is his father's cousin. It's a really really big family.
I didn't know exactly the relation, but I know that the Romney family has some cash there and spreads wide.

He'd be a popular hire, and with good reason, having just turned in the best season in Utah State history and already wrapping up a bowl victory, going from 4-8 in Year 1 to 11-2 in Year 4. From Bucky's 5th Quarter's breakdown of him as a candidate:Overview: When you think of Gary Andersen, you think Utah. Born in Salt Lake City, he started his playing career at Ricks Junior College (which grew up to be BYU-Idaho), and played his final two years at Utah. And since 1997, he was the defensive line coach at Utah, the head coach at Southern Utah, the defensive coordinator of Utah and the head coach at Utah State.
Why it Works: .359. That's Utah State's winning percentage since its return to FBS level football. That is, before Gary Andersen showed up. Being the third wheel in a state where there's barely enough players two is no easy task and no small feat. Recruiting along those lines is a real tough road to hoe. And he did it with style and creativity. I mean, getting to an over .500 record in three seasons after the guy (Brent Guy) previous to him went 9-38 during his run. You know he can make something great.
Also, just for fun, here's what Andersen said three weeks ago, after receiving a Utah State contract extension through 2018:
"I plan to remain the head football coach at Utah State University," Andersen stated. "The interest I have received is a compliment to the quality young men in this program. Their hard work and dedication has built a culture that will enable us to continue to be successful at a very high level moving forward.
"I love Cache Valley, this university and these young men, and I am humbled and excited to continue to be the coach here. The leadership of President (Stan) Albrecht and Mr. Barnes, as well as the support from the fans and community, are big reasons why this is the right place for myself and my family at this time."

Stuff I'll spread being texted to me from different message boards that I will let spread like wildfire whether right or wrong (modern day media is awesome/horrible).
-Good at getting the diamonds in the rough, just as the Badgers have for years.
-Both coordinators turned down different gigs. Not sure how that would work given that they'd probably have to go pro-style if they followed him.

So he has never really been out of Utah, has awful records until this year, did they beat any good teams this year? What kind of staff is he going to put together? The biggest question is how the hell is he going to recruit the Midwest and Florida......don't feel great about this at all.

He replaced Dan Mullens as Utah DC coming from Southern Utah. Was a long time Ron McBride guy who has been Utah centric at every job he's had. He probably will be able to recruit Hawaii/Mainland Polynesian players.

They should have beat Wisconsin this year. I know nothing about him except that game and what I've read in the last five minutes, but I'm good with the hire.

Utah State was atrocious before he got there. 3-9 with their last Bowl Game being in '97 under John L. Smith. Turned them from 4-8, 4-8, 7-6, and now 11-2. Not sure how you can complain about that.
Again, sounds like he'll be a guy that relies on the local kids to start.

Considering the team he had the start with, Id say he did pretty well once he got all his recruits in. I understand the rest of your concerns though.

It will be interesting to see what kind of assistants he hires. Have to imagine at least a few of the more important assistants will have strong midwest connections since he has zero connection to this part of the country.

In 2008, Andersen was named a finalist for the Broyles Award, given to the top assistant coach in college football. He was also named a Rivals.com top 10 non-BCS recruiter that year and picked as the No. 1 non-BCS recruiter by Rivals.com in 2005.

Re: BADGERS HIRE FORMER VIKING SLASH KICKER
His recruiting classes look like typical UW classes (mostly 2-3 star guys), but most of his recruits are west coast guys like Arizona, Utah, California, even Hawaii, and etc.
He actually has a Milwaukee kid in his '12 class.

He also perfected the college football-speak a few weeks ago:

Re: BADGERS HIRE FORMER VIKING SLASH KICKER
I hadnt heard his name brought up before, but the more I read about him, he sounds like a good hire and an almost perfect UW guy as far as finding diamonds in rough and etc. Hopefully, he can bring in some good offensive assistants that run the pro style as defense is obviously his forte.
He'll also have the whole state to himself, which will help him recruiting wise.

We should have backed up the Brinks truck to get Paul Chryst.
This guy seems like a solid coach, but Chryst is perfect for this program.

Is being a defensive coordinator on Urban Meyer's squad worth anything?

Following in the tradition of BB, Gary Andersen has a Utah State tattoo.
