I'll honestly send you a check for $1 every time there is a college sports thread and you don't parallel every thought to the Gophers.

Fair enough. To my credit though, MN hockey and WI hockey are about as similar as any two sports programs in college.

He somehow forgot about the coach who came directly before Bielema, had a better three year winning percentage and won three bowls, two of them being the Rose.

Alvarez certainly was better given he had to rebuild a morbid program and he won all three Rose Bowls, but i do think some Badgers fans seem to forget the quite a few years that the team finished 5th-8th in the Big Ten under Barry, including a number of ugly non-conference losses.

I'm not bashing Alvarez FWIW, he deserves his legend status in Wisconsin, just pointing out that he also had a number of very disappointing seasons besides those three Rose Bowl years. The type of seasons many Bielema bashers would have killed him for.

Rittenberg/Bennett ‏@ESPN_BigTen
RT @BTNRickPizzo: #Badgers source tells me Barry Alvarez was also aware of #bretbielema plans to leave prior to end of regular season.

Seems like a hire sooner rather than later could happen then.

So those of you who are excited for him to leave...

We've got teams like Tennessee, UCLA, Notre Dame, Michigan, Florida, USC, etc. all suffering to varying degrees after a coaching shakeup. Teams that were once or still are on a much higher plane than the Badgers.

What is it about a coach leaving after 3 straight Rose Bowls that you are excited about?

Hiring a guy like Tressel, his former rival, is not a realistic option because I don't think those two egos would mesh well.

My money is on hiring one of our current or former coaches.

Yea, i think Barry goes for a more fairly young hungry type who either has been a head coach at a smaller program, an assistant at a big program, or someone with ties to the Badgers program.

I don't know if he'll suck there as much as everyone seems to think. If you're a good recruiter, the south is where you want to be. They'll obviously spend money too, he should be able to field a nice coaching staff to help with Xs and Os. Maybe buy him a watch too.

Not to surprised by this, it sounds as though Bret had peed in the Cheerios of a number of people in and around the program.

Barry has to feel a little red ass considering Bret was his boy and is now bailing for dough, especially on the heels of a very underwhelming season.

My biggest concern is the lack of decent replacements from the names I am hearing, the list sucks, big time. Chryst is the only name that interests me and I would be surprised if he bailed from Pitt after one year.

Lots of people wanted Bret gone, he is now, but who do you want running the show?

Should be interesting to watch.
Ball so hard.

I'd love to have Barry coach the Rose Bowl but not behind. No freakin' way should BB be on the sideline. His office should be empty now. Need to make a hire ASAP to disrupt recruiting as little as possible.
I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

Yeah, I think its patently absurd for Bielema to think he should coach in the Rose Bowl. Just let Barry step in for this one game as a figurehead and let the assistants manage.

The fact that he is a piece of **** human being. This all depends on who we bring in and whether we keep our recruits... but Bielema was a guy I was ashamed to root for. It was not coincidence that nearly all of his assistants bolted when Chryst left, or that we had 5 losses the year afterwards. The Rose Bowls have been great, but haven't seen any W's in the big games at the same time.

He is a very good recruiter, but he is a bad in-game football coach. I'm glad I don't have to put up with him anymore.

I agree that Bret will have more fertile recruiting talent to pick from in the south, but Arkansas is in the brutal SEC West division with Alabama, LSU, and Texas A&M. As tough as staying at Wisconsin could be with Urban Meyer now at Ohio St., that SEC West is an absolute beast, especially if Auburn gets things turned around.

Then again, i'm sure he got a big time raise and as is almost always the case in sports, money drives decisions, regardless of how much athletes and coaches deny money was that important.

I hear ya. Some young blood and an offensive minded HC doesn't sounds terrible to me though.

What about Bob Bostad as a candidate?
