I'm thankful the FO finally realized (after a decade) that interior LB play actually does matter.

I think they addressed it in a pretty meaningful way last season by signing Campbell for cheap in free agency. Which is why I don't think this should really change the philosophy of not spending high draft capital on ILB's. But size/speed athletic freaks like Quay and Micah Parsons are the dudes you just make exceptions for.

I guess I wouldn't call giving a guy a 1 year 2 million throw away deal 'pretty meaningful.' No way anyone could have predicted him coming in here and putting not only a stranglehold on the spot but also being named first team all pro. I could, however, see them watching Campbell play last year and being like, "oh, that position is important."

Quay will only get better. He still runs around a lot not knowing exactly where he should be. But that will come with experience. Due to DL depth Wyatt is being brought along slowly which is fine.

Wyatt had really high pff grades in limited snaps. So hopefully its coming together.

It's gonna be like Gary's rookie season. We have Clark, Lowry, Reed, and Slaton which is a pretty solid rotation as is. So we probably won't see much of him for awhile

So queue the "he's a bust" talk after about 100 snaps? Sounds about right.

I think (or maybe hope) Quay will go from super athletic REactive LB that chases guys down with ease, to more aggressive attacking the other side of the line of scrimmage over time. As he diagnoses quicker, could see him really blowing up plays.

Likewise, if he can watch some Zadarius tape on he blitzed up the middle, see what he can learn and maybe be a low double digit sack guy at some point in his career.

Quay flashing despite being really overwhelmed just makes me think he's going to be a stud. He showed some good pass rushing to. I'm excited to see if they start adding more and more every week.

Wyatt has that spin move that's so nasty too. Really excited to see him at the end of the year let alone next year.

Clay Matthews always thought he would play his entire career with the Green Bay Packers. Even when he left after 10 years to play one season with the Los Angeles Rams, he thought there was a chance he would still finish his career where it started.

But Matthews, the Packers' all-time sack leader, says he's now at peace with the entirety of his career.

Matthews said after the 2018 season the Packers told him he would still be in their plans, even though his production had waned. However, once they signed pass-rushers Za'Darius Smith and Preston Smith in free agency, he knew it was over. Shortly after, he said he received a call from Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst informing him that they were moving on.

"I would have loved to finish my career there," Matthews said Monday as part of a promotional tour for Tide detergent. "Based on my discussions after that 2018 season, I thought we were going to continue moving forward. But yeah the manner in which it did kinda caught me by surprise. Ultimately it is what it is. I had fun in my year in L.A. It was a blast getting to go home and play with some incredible players."

He wasn't initially done with football after his one season with the Rams (2019). He bounced back from 3.5 sacks in his final season with the Packers with 8.0 sacks in 13 games with the Rams. After sitting out the COVID year in 2020, he thought there was the chance to return to Green Bay because his position coach with the Rams, Joe Barry, had just been hired as the Packers' defensive coordinator.

"He had reached out to me," Matthews said. "He knew that I could still play and I think he knew if he had me, he could find a way to use me within the scheme. But nothing ever manifested, so I think ultimately there might have been powers above that didn't want that to happen. But yeah, there was a brief glimmer of hope of coming back. That didn't happen, but it's all good. But I'm at peace with my career."

Matthews, a Packers first-round pick in 2009 and a key member of their 2010 Super Bowl team, said it's not a coincidence that he's wearing a Packers jersey in the Tide ad in which he tries to convince people that not washing a jersey has nothing to do with whether a team wins or loses.

"Everyone knows me from my time in Green Bay," said Matthews, who had 83.5 of his 91.5 career sacks with the Packers. "The 10 years I played with the Packers were a lot more than the one year I played with the Rams."

I'm going to need to see this defense against a quality offense before I really start to buy into them. I believe they have talent, but they got shellacked by the one offense they faced this year that had weapons. The Bucs were decimated by injuries and the Bears suck. Seems as though they're going to face Brian Hoyer this weekend, which won't be much of a test for them. Then they've got the Giants, Jets, and Commanders.

That SNF matchup @Buffalo will be a very good test for them.

I'm not sure shellacked is the right word. The second half against Minnesota was pretty good. But I agree I'm not sold yet. We need to see a test.

I like Max Borghi as a 3rd down RB / returner. But not sure he gives you anything more than we are getting from Goodson. Guessing we might be cycling through potential KR most the year unless we find someone that really sticks.

Return to Green Bay Packers
