Seems drastic. The Jets are going to be damn good next year.

:o

Just saw this, he must be in real trouble/a giant team cancer for them to ship him out of town for a 5th. All the sudden the Steelers are in the market for a WR. Dez Bryant? Brandon Marshall? Do they really want to deal with the headaches those two might bring right after getting rid of one.

Santonio was a knucklehead off the field, and might've been up for a four game drug suspension. However, it's a little interesting that they're trying to send a message by trading Santonio for a low pick instead of trading or publicly reprimanding Big Ben.

I don't see any way they take anyone with red flags, and that's eliminating Bryant and Marshall.

This could be great for the Pack. They had been penciled in to take the best available interior lineman. It's all speculation of course, but this might shift their focus to Demaryius Thomas instead of Iutpati or Pouncey.

The reason for that is easy. Roethlisberger is a franchise QB that would be incredibly hard to replace, Holmes is a quality but nothing overly special WR that can be replaced much easier.

The Steelers obviously hate seeing their franchise image being dragged through the mud and Holmes has a history of real character problems. He only had one year on his deal left also and weren't going to pay him, so they cut ties. The rest of the league must share similar concerns given the best the Steelers could get for Holmes is a 5th. I don't blame other teams either, it's a good bet that Holmes will get in trouble again eventually and he's no Moss like talent.

This.

I'm pretty sure movin to NYC is not going to help Holmes stay out of trouble.

They still can't be that good... They have Stone Hands Edwards on their team. :D

Holmes for a 5th is an amazing deal though.

Its all but a sure thing he is going to be suspended the first 4 games of the season, that definitely lowered his value, still surprised they couldn't get at least a 4th rounder for him. I think they were really just trying to send a message to the entire team(and Big Ben) to clean up their acts and this crap won't be tolerated.

Yeah the last knucklehead WR to go from Pittsburgh to NYC ended up in jail.

Just saw this. WTF? A 1,200 yard, 26 year old, big play threat just got traded for a fifth round draft choice? He must be a total douche. They're having character problems on their team and they wanted to weed him out - I get it - but I feel like even with his 4 game suspension that they should have been able to get more value for him.

He's likely going to miss the first 4 games of the year, he's a huge douche like you said, and he's in the last year of his contract with no intention of resigning with Pittsburgh. It's not hard to see why they could only get a 5th, especially if they just wanted him gone instead of playing hardball for a better pick.

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette was reporting that the Steelers were just going to release him if they couldn't find a trade partner.

Everyone's sitting here saying how the Jets just robbed the Steelers, don't forget that:

1. Holmes is facing a 4 games suspension in the face (actually looks like he is suspended).

2. He wants to get P A I D.

3. He's got some SERIOUS charecter issues. I realize half the league probably smokes weed, but I don't know anyone else who's been dumb enough to wake and bake and tell everyone about it on twitter. Then you have the domestic violence issue.

I know everyone looks at a 4th and thinks it's a steal, but after you pay the guy a ridiculous amount of money, you have to worry about him gettings suspended for a year at basically any time - I'll take the 4th in a deep draft personally.

My money is on this blowing up in the Jets face.

Also - my guess is this was just as much a warning to their franchise QB as it was them cleaning up their "image."

Had no idea he was on the last year of his deal. Guess that's what I get for not reading the article. No doubt the guy wants to get paid. Steelers don't want to go there, especially with how much trouble he is/has been, so they make an example out of him. Makes sense.

I've read the pick is a 5th.

This is a steal for the Jets any way you cut it. You know he's going to be on his best behavior because it's a contract season. If he behaves they get a dominant WR for 12 games plus the playoffs. If he acts up, he gets cut and the Jets are only out a 5th rounder. Big deal. Hell, I'd use him for one season and regardless of his behavior I'd let some other team pay him in 2011.

I was flipping through the radio stations on my way home today and Jason Wilde was saying that at least one team told him that they had him pegged as "Plaxico-Plus" from a character perspective going into that draft.
