OT: UConn to Big Ten?

I was listening to Cowherd this morning and he was ranting and raving about UConn apparently joining the Big Ten. He made it seem like it was a done deal, and that the Pac 10 would respond by adding Utah and possibly Colorado.

Couldn't find a specific link saying it's a done deal, but a few websites are speculating about it right now..including the WSJ.

What do we think? We'd be adding a top flight men's and women's bball program and a solid football program, along with the northeast market, including NY, Boston, etc.

It would be sweet for basketball. Meh for football compared to the other possibilities. This has been a reported "done deal" for like three schools now though, so I won't really comment much on it until it is official.

Yeah been so many schools involved in this rumor, until the Big Ten says something official I've given up on speculating.

Everyone's been reported coming to the Big Ten. Goes double for Big East schools and those even remotely close to the NY market (Rutgers, Syracuse). The only thing I'm not taking lightly at this point is the report that they're speeding up the process form their original, ballpark 12-18 month figure.

UCONN probably has a bigger NY connection that either Rutgers or Syracuse.

Interesting if that happens.

On a different note, I can't stand Cowherd. I tried to give his show a try on multiple occasions and just can't do it. Very pompous, always cuts off callers, all about the big markets, ratings, etc. And he looks like a little weasel that you would love to just shut up.

All rumors.

Hearing Rutgers, Pittsburgh, UConn, Missouri, Nebraska. 16 team conference or 14 team? All a ploy to force ND into the Big Ten? Selecting multiple teams from the Big East will destroy that conference.

I'm definitely excited to see what happens.

I thought this was a good summary of possible teams

Syracuse's basketball program has built up a good fan base in New York because of how often they've come to play at MSG. It's essentially been New York's college basketball team (in a city known for their pro sports), especially with St. Johns down. I would think that has some draw in the city even when they aren't playing at the garden.

Rutgers makes sense geographically for TV markets, being 30 miles away. Many in the know have time-and-again pointed to Rutgers as the team most likely to break the conference into the coveted TV market, though again I'll mention it's clearly an area driven by pro sports so I doubt there's a clear choice here.

That said, it's possible. I don't live in New York and I sure as hell don't know anything about their TV markets. UConn's football program has been okay/better recently, but I still doubt anything worthy of converting some NYers from just giving all of their attention to the Giants or Jets, especially considering they're 200 miles away and never come to play in the area unless it's @ Rutgers. Maybe the basketball program's been enough to draw them in, but I don't know.

At the least, UConn breaks them into the Northeast in general.

At this point, all of the teams who have been rumored to join the Big Ten can form their own conference.

I honestly don't care a ton about which team it is, I just hope it's only one team. I think moving to 14 teams would be just stupid.

I still like Notre Dame as the top choice to add to both football and basketball. UCONN's football team isn't that good so theres no added bonus there, but Notre Dame is a well-rounded athletic school.

UCONN is no Ohio St. for Football, but they aren't that poor either. They are certainly going to be better than the bottom of the Big-10 in that regard if added.

They have really improved a lot in the recent years, I don't follow their football program closely so I don't know if they got a new coach or what the difference is but they are definitely a program on the rise and joining the Big 10 would no doubt increase their recruiting chances for football.

Their basketball program would definitely be a boost to the Big 10 basketball conference and I have no idea about other sports since those are the only two college sports I follow.
