NEW UNIFORM: This will be DE Julius Peppers' sixth game against the Packers; the previous five were as a member of the Carolina Panthers. LT Chad Clifton has been on the field in all five of the games, and RT Mark Tauscher has been at his station in four. In all, Peppers has 27 tackles and three sacks. His first came in 2007 when Daryn Colledge missed DE Mike Rucker, and Peppers took advantage to pour in on Brett Favre. In '08, Peppers beat Clifton up the field for a sack in 3.1 seconds. His third sack came on a late chase in 6.5 seconds during the same game. "He will be on both sides," an executive in personnel for an NFL team said. "I was a little disappointed in him in the Dallas game. That's him. He's up and down." Said a coach for a recent Bears' opponent: "He's a guy that can dominate a game. You better know where he is because he can destroy you."
YOUNG VS. OLD: Clay Matthews probably will spend most of the game over RT Kevin Shaffer, a journeyman who has started 91 of 118 games for Atlanta, Cleveland and Chicago. Frank Omiyale, who started at RT in the first two games, moved to the left side last Sunday in Dallas when Chris Williams pulled a hamstring. When Williams returns, it appears that he will replace Shaffer. "Shaffer can get killed by Matthews," one scout said. "He's short-armed and doesn't play with a lot of range. That's why he's a backup. He is smart. He's a guy you're always looking to replace. He does get away with holding a lot." Matthews bull-rushed Williams for a sack at Soldier Field in December.
FEATURED BACK: Matt Forte will make his fifth start against the Packers. A second-round draft choice in 2008, Forte has a long rush of 28 yards and a long reception of 18 in the four games. In all, Forte has rushed 76 times for 243 yards, a 3.2-yard average and one touchdown. He also has caught 12 passes for 85 yards, a 7.1 average and no scores. "Last year Forte pulled a hamstring and was never in shape," one scout said. "This year, he actually looks faster than his rookie year. He's like (Ryan) Grant in a lot of ways, but with Forte you get the added dimension of his ball skills as a receiver. He's a downhill, north-south guy. He's definitely in shape. This is the best he's looked."
VETERAN CORNER: CB Charles Tillman, 29, will be starting his 14th game against the Packers. He has three interceptions in the rivalry, including a 95-yard touchdown in 2005 when Favre threw the ball too short as he attempted to throw it away on an aborted shovel pass. In the six meetings over the last three seasons, the only pass of 20 yards or more allowed by Tillman was a 25-yard reception by Jermichael Finley on a post pattern from the slot at Soldier Field in December. For his career, he has forced 22 fumbles. "You better be aware where he is," an opposing coach said. "You catch it; you better tuck it away because he'll take it away. He's like a Charles Woodson. He's more dangerous than people give him credit for. He is a top-flight player." Added one personnel man: "He can't really run anymore. He fell down on some double moves in Dallas."
NOTHING YET: QB Jay Cutler debuted against the Packers in October 2007 for Denver, but his passer rating of 95.7 wasn't quite enough in a 19-13 overtime loss. Last year, the Bears were 0-2, and Cutler's passer ratings were 43.2 at Lambeau Field and 74.9 at Soldier Field. Through two games, Cutler's rating is at 121.1 after a sterling showing in Dallas. "I thought he looked very composed," one scout said after watching the Cowboys-Bears tape. "Good mechanics. Kept the legs under him stepping into throws. Looks like he's got good confidence now. He's protecting the ball. I don't think he's turned it over in the red area this year. I think they really harped on that. He will force it, but he's got that way down now. He's an athlete. They move the pocket. I'm expecting them to run some more move the pocket against Green Bay."
I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.
