McCarthy is AWFUL @ challenges, WHY?

Post#1 » by LarryHarris » Tue Sep 28, 2010 5:07 pm

Another blown timeout last night, Chuck reminded me after the game that a couple years ago, he was best in the league, what happened?

If we can clearly see at home what is going on, why does the spotter have such a hard time?

I don't know why, I don't know if these are his decisions or if someone up in the booth, someone needs to be held accountable because the last 2 seasons it has been beyond awful and inexcusable.

The challenge last week when Jones caught the ball out of bounds was ridiculously stupid too.

He called the challenge of the fumble on his own it sounds like.

"I was standing right there. I had a pretty good indication of what happened. I did see the defensive back's foot swing out of bounds. I was just hopeful that the officials, maybe, you know, saw that his foot may have hit. With 2:18 and two challenges left, you know, that's obviously a huge play in the game, maybe it could swing our way."

Seriously, if you're going to use a challenge at that point, you better go upstairs and make damn sure that you're going to win it. That timeout was huge.

From what it sounds like, MM challenged it "hoping" it would be overturned over actually going by what he/they saw. It was a decision made on emotion and it cost us a timeout.

which is why u have someone in ur ear screaming DONT **** CHALLENGE IT MIKE. our challenges make me sick. i dont know which one is to blame, but i lean towards blaming mike on this because i tend to trust the guy looking at the replay ten times in the booth, un less of course the guy is totally blind

Right, kind of like I was hoping when I woke up that last night was just a bad dream. You can't do that MM!

MM should have been busy chewing out Jones instead of challenging that play.

It was obviously a desperation move to throw the challenge flag on that one,in way I can kinda understand were he was coming from but again, time outs were so crucial at that point.

I don't understand why he didn't go upstairs and ask them. It's not like he didn't have the time, the Bears weren't running out there as fast as they could to get a play off. Look at the **** replays and then challenge if you think you can win. Don't just randomly throw it without a replay based on what you think you saw.

'
i can understand desperation when the opposing team is rushing to get the line hoping that the guys upstairs cant take a look at the replay in time. but there was enough time for someone to tell MM that it obviously stayed inbounds. way more trouble than just this though

Isn't there one of the assistants in the booth whose job it is to quickly look at replays on plays like that and tell McCarthy what to do? There must be. I believe they have the same TV feed we get at home. And that replay was shown more than once in plenty of time to relay the info the McCarthy before the Bears ran their next play. It was a change of possession, THERE WAS PLENTY OF TIME.
I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

Sometimes it seems to me like he does these challenges just to show that he believes in the player, which is really stupid. Hopefully, this was a big enough snafu that he will start to go upstairs. It was obvious to anyone watching at home...

I use to be a big McCarthy fan but I have completely lost faith in him. I just don't think we can win a Super Bowl with this guy. Challenging that play was inexcusable and from listening to him today, I truly believe he would do it again. He reminds me of Martz in that way that he stubbornly tries to prove that he is the smartest man in the stadium by doing some of the dumbest sh*t ever.

Sadly I don't think Thompson would ever fire him......because he's a stubborn bastard too. :nonono:
F*** Marc Davis, f*** Tim Donaghy and f*** David Stern as a staff, record label and as a mothaf**kin crew......and if you wanna be down with Stern then F*** YOU TOO!!! Stu Jackson f*** you too.....all you mothaf**kas F*** YOU TOO!!!!

I'm not trying to defend that terrible challenge by McCarthy, but it's amazing to me in watching a lot of NFL football that so many coaches make stupid challenges and how terrible so many coaches are at clock management late in the half along with end of games. It's crazy.

I'll be watching games and often thinking to myself, why the hell isn't so and so coach using timeouts here. Then, once to much time has been burned, they finally start using the timeouts.

Apparently during the MNF radio broadcast Boomer Esiason said, "the coaching guys for GB are next to us and telling McCarthy to challenge it. I have no clue what they're looking at."

Radio announcers are in the same booth as the coaching staff? That's odd. Even if they are in separate booths it's odd that they could hear what the coaches are saying.

It seems like he challenges based off emotion, rather than visual proof...

It wasn't like the coaches upstairs didn't have time to look at it. It was a turnover, the Packers D and Bears O were just taking the field...
