Game 5: Washington - Pregame talk

There will definitely be an emotional letdown after the circus that surrounded McNabb and the team last week.

Rodgers was critical of the offensive game plan used against Detroit. Particularly that Driver and Jennings were out too many plays.

Rodgers: "Offensively we’ve got to find our identity again. I think we’ve got to make sure that we’ve got our best players on the field at all times and find ways to get them the ball. We had some ad-libs today where we hit Donald (Driver) on the big play today. Take that play away and there’s clearly not a whole lot of production. We ran 42 plays or 45 -- I don't remember how many plays we ran -- but it's not going to cut it. How do you get better from that? Well, you've got to stop them but you also have to convert third downs. I think we need to find ways to keep our best players on the field and find ways to get them the ball.”

We had great production last week getting in the shotgun, spreading them out. Chicago is a tough scheme. I think Detroit runs their scheme well but II don't think we gave them a chance (by) spreading them out enough to find those mismatches. When we did, I think we were pretty productive.

I think you have to see what's working. We had a lot of success last week. Chicago plays a different scheme than Detroit does but I think we can dink and dunk out of the spread and I think we can attack down the field. We need to continue to find ways to keep our best weapons on the field at all times.

McCarthy: "I would say we're on the same page....We're a multiple offense so we do a lot with our personnel, we have a lot on the quarterback's plate so we talk every day. I'm very confident we're on the same page."

"I have not talked to Aaron today."

"As far as spreading it out or not spreading it out....coaches coach and players play."

Other items from MM's presser today:

On Atari Bigby: "We won't know until we have him on the field."

Charlie Peprah should be able to practice this week.

"Derrick (Martin) did OK."

"We need to play better on defense. There's no question it was not our best day on defense."
Anthony Levine off the practice squad is a possibility.

My biggest disappointment, four giveaways is unforgivable.

Third down we didn't do a good job on either side of the ball.

Looking at Jordy Nelson on kickoffs, 'there's accountability back there.'

Had some breakdowns in man coverage...had a tough time screens. Screens are used against fire zone.

Nick Barnett is getting some more testing done.

To turn the ball over four turnovers and still win the football game, says something about your team.
"I think we need to get a little more realistic....You would have thought we lost the game. We're about winning and improvement. We won, but we have a ton of room for improvement. Maybe it will be good for us."

I could see McNabb having an absolutely huge game against us considering we could be without Harris, Burnett, Shields, Chillar and potentially Barnett since he is apparently getting work done on him.

I'm very concerned about our ability to cover TEs after last weeks game. If you get beaten up by Hill with Scheffler and Pettigrew... You had better believe that they are going to come after us with McNabb and Cooley. That could be very difficult for us to stop, especially if Chillar isn't ready.

Should be a good game. Rodgers needs to step up, the defense must improve.

Well, there are no gimme games the next 7 weeks, so this team better start figuring it out. So many injuries right now in terms of the pass D that it's hard to know what to expect there. To me, Martin and Peprah both suck. Bigby isn't a stud, but he's quite a bit better than either of those two.

If Chillar is out for this game, it is big, because Cooley is arguably McNabb's favorite target. The DL and Matthews are really going to have to have a game in terms of pressuring McNabb.

The good news is the Skins literally have Moss and Cooley and that's about it on offense. Seriously, they're giving Ryan Torrain more carries than Clinton Portis, they're hurting so much. They should get LT Trent Williams back on offense this week though, and he's looked great in early action.

I would say it boils down to if the Packers can get the ball in the end zone a decent amount. If they can score in the mid-20's, there's no logical reason they would lose, the Skins just don't have enough firepower.

Of course I would have thought that with Detroit also...

I do Sports Radio in DC on Fridays; I'm looking forward to talking with some Wisconsin media on-air about the game. Of course if we can't get anyone I may have to ask one of you guys to call-in...

Yeah...Santana Moss is a joke 5/6 weeks but he may go off that other week. He had 0 receptions, 0 yards last week.

Curious question...

Does any DB in the NFL get away with more contact than Charles Woodson? He's maybe my favorite football player ever... But man does he get away with some ridiculous stuff after five yards.

Also, I think we may want to look into starting Woodson at safety if Shields is healthy and ready to go.

Will this be the week MM finally gives Kuhn more carries?

I think Woodson is going to have to stay at CB until we get Harris back. I don't think I want Shields starting.

Will this be the week TT does something about our RB situation so we don't have to debate whether John Kuhn should be getting more carries?

I wouldn't mind Shields starting and Bush playing nickle against whoever it is that Washington's 2nd and 3rd WRs are... As opposed to Martin playing at safety. Martin is pretty bad.

I listen to DC talk radio every day. Which station? What time? What's your name?

Please don't tell me you're Doc Walker. :P

McNabb looks terrible. Very inaccurate, but he's a winner. I don't see the Packers as vulnerable against McNabb, but I could obviously be wrong. Torrain is the real deal though.

At this point in his career McNabb is more of a name than a threat on the field. He's still incredibly inaccurate. (honesty he's been that way his whole career) My biggest concern is Washingtons D; they are very underrated and pretty damn good.

Chillar's injury appears it may be more significant than originally thought:

Wow.

It is getting to the point where it is going to be difficult to overcome all of these injuries.

McNabb is going to run for 800 yards and we'll have no clue how to stop it.
