I'm kind of tired of hearing Gopher fans' opinions on who the next football coach should be. So I'd like to know who Badger fans would NOT want to see as the next Minnesota coach. Who do you think can restore competency to the Gophers state, who do you think can close the boarders in recruiting, who do you think can out coach Bret Bielema?
I'm leaving out obvious home run hires like Jim Harbaugh, Chris Peteresen, Gary Patterson, etc., because they are not going to come to Minnesota. Here are some of the more realistic coaching canidates at the moment.
Mike Leach - Former Texas Tech Head Coach

Mike Bellotti - Former Oregon Head Coach

Al Golden - Temple Head Coach

Leslie Frazier - Minnesota Vikings D-Coordinator

Kevin Sumlin - Houston Head Coach

Paul Chryst - Wisconsin O-Coordinator

I'm obviously on the Mike Leach bandwagon, mostly because I think it would be fun to watch the Air Raid offense. Who knows if it would work in the Big Ten though.

Please don't take Chryst and I think Frazier would be pretty good. Leach would be interesting and may have success but would need a few years like Rich Rod to rebuild.

I want them to keep up their tradition of hiring incompetents. Frazier would fit that mold. It's where football coaching careers go to die.
I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

They should have kept Mason.

I'd rather not see Leach get the job. He might be a little crazy but I think he could get the program back on track. Other than that, none of those other names on the list jump out at me as somebody I absolutely wouldn't want at Minnesota.

Al Golden would be a good hire it appears.
Firstly, he pulled off an amazing turnaround at a Temple program who was getting waxed by everybody and arguably the worst in FBS just 5 years ago.
Secondly, recruiting wise he's threatening to Bucky because he has ties in NJ and PA; which are areas which it would behoove Bielema to exploit more considering, especially Jersey, are low on flagship programs, and you don't have the cold weather transition deterrences. Also, he should have some midwest ties playing in the MAC for a few years.
Thirdly, he has put together some solid defenses.
My only question about him is how his offensive style would fit Minnesota's in and surrounding state recruiting base. Currently he's employing a 2-back system which is predicated on smaller, quicker backs getting on the perimeter. That's not going to be beneficial when, like Wisconsin, Minnesota are known for producing good powerful offensive linemen who you want to run behind and between. And then use that to set up the play action pass. It might be something he's flexible about though because he's a former defensive coordinator, not offensive.
Mike Leach I think you're asking for trouble again with because he'd stubbornly want to force in an offense that won't work at Minnesota. Plus, he's going to deter some kids from going there with the stories of abuse, and he's the win at all costs type of guy who will create NCAA violations down the line. You'll get an initial spike of improvement, but regret hiring him later ala Brewster.

Thanks for replying Berman. I was hoping you'd share your thoughts, you seem to be the most knowledgeable college football fan on the board. Golden is my 2nd choice and "safest" choice. The biggest thing going against him is that the President and AD want to hire an "established winner" and he has a losing record. I've also heard rumors that Joe Pa thinks very highly of him and could be in the running to take over the PSU job, but I've also heard he burned some bridges so who knows.

Don't want to see Brad Childress as next Gopher coach-----It is way too entertaining watching him screw up the Vikings!!!!!
