Trotter thinks MM is Coach of the Year

Post#1 » by an_also » Fri Nov 5, 2010 12:00 am

3. Packers coach Mike McCarthy won't get much consideration for Coach of the Year, but he should.

McCarthy, arguably, has done his finest work since arriving in Green Bay in 2006. He started the season without injured secondary starters Al Harris (knee) and Atari Bigby (ankle), then lost running back Ryan Grant, linebacker Nick Barnett (wrist), tight end Jermichael Finley (knee) and safety Morgan Burnett (knee) to season-ending injuries. Both of his lines have been banged up and outside linebacker Clay Matthews has been fighting a hamstring injury, still the Packers are 5-3 and leading the NFC North.

They have not been the juggernaut we all expected, but they appear to have developed some grit that was missing earlier in the year when they lost three of their first six games by a field goal each. The past two weeks, however, they beat a desperate Minnesota team by four and halted the Jets' five-game winning streak despite failing to score a touchdown.

They appear to be building momentum similar to last year, when they started 4-4 and rallied to win seven of their final eight. If the Packers have similar success this year, McCarthy should be strongly considered for Coach of the Year. More likely, he'll be overshadowed by Kansas City's Todd Haley, St. Louis' Steve Spagnuolo and Tampa Bay's Raheem Morris, each of whom has turned a projected doormat into midseason contenders. They deserve the recognition, but so does McCarthy.

This team could still go either way, really, so it's premature to say that his coaching has helped us turn the corner - and I'm somebody who generally likes McCarthy while realizing he has some definite weaknesses.

Todd Haley sucks and players don't seem to like him all that much. The difference this year is that he has two brilliant assistants and more talent to work with. Spagnuolo is really good. The jury is still out on Raheem Morris. The Lions probably won't win enough games but I like Schwartz a lot in Detroit, too.

Capers should be a shoe-in for DC of the year because of the injuries he's had to deal with.

Good motivator. Lousy game coach.
I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

If he was the one primarily responsible for the D, I'd agree, but the O and ST have both been poor, and we've lost all three of the really close games. So I'm going to disagree. He's not a good adjustment maker.

Not a big MM fan at all. Still pretty impressive for a team with this many injuries to be 5-3 and in position to win the division.

I think most fans underrate McCarthy, because he doesn't have a magnetic personality. He's not a windbag like Rex Ryan, and because of that, it seems like people consider McCarthy to be a poor motivator. Oh well. The players seem to like him, and the guy gets results. Most of the time he's playing the right percentages.

Don't forget that he's had to deal with injuries not only on the defensive side. Clifton and Tausher have been in and out, Driver is gimpy, and Finley and Grant were lost for the season. That's a lot to overcome, and he's doing it. His teams generally improve as the season progresses, so we'll see what happens.

We Packer fans have a lack of perspective. Besides Belichek and Tomlin, most NFL coaches are morons. Many challenge silly plays and call bad plays. Comparatively, McCarthy isn't bad.

He's lowlights include an infatuation with Kuhn in short yardage situations. It's painful to watch the running plays where Quarless can't black the back-side backer and Kuhn gets 2 feet of steam before meeting the end of the line.

The positives are there. He's made something out of nothing, and our offense is pretty dynamic.

Let's finish 13-3, then I'll vote for him.

Wow...awful. No way MM should be in consideration for COTY.

Hopefully 2 years from now when Bill Cowher is HC we can talk about our HC winning COTY.

If we finish 13-3 or 12-4, I could see MM getting some votes. I'd rather have TT win GMOTY, though.
