Oline future

The lack of running game all season and being dominated by Lion’s DL has me wondering about our OL. I can see trashing all 5 former starters. Cutting Tausher, Clifton & Wells and not resigning either College or Spitz. It’s a risk but its just as much a risk Mark & Chad completely fall apart or Scott is overwhelmed regularily. Spitz is injury prone and College sucks even healthy. We save a pile of $ that could be used if any good FA OL is on the market. Tho TT probably wouldn’t try if there was anyway. (But we can use the saved $ to resign Jenkins, Bishop, Jones, Jolly, Peprah, Crosby, etc.)

Still change is needed in our OL. Bulaga is probably close to = Chad at this point, better at run blocking. Not hard to do as well as Tausch anymore. Wells has been OK but he’s getting smaller every year. Given a full camp of reps at just LG Lang would probably be solid. Draft a G in 3rd to compete w/ Lang. Newhouse looked good in camp and scored high on wonderlic. Draft an OT in 2nd to compete w/ Newhouse. McDonald looked very good in camp – hence making the team. He’s currently our 3rd string C and has good size. Draft a C in 5th or 6th

LT- Bulaga
LG- Lang / 3rd
C- McDonald / 5th
RG- Sitton
RT- Newhouse / 2nd

Also sign 1 or 2 old vets for experienced backups.

DRAFT
1st – OLB
2nd - OT
3rd – RB
3rd – G
4th – PR-KR
5th – C
6th – ILB
7th – QB

I'd be down with a scenario like this. I'm sick of our Oline dragging the offense/team down, I want our Oline to get to the point where it's actually an asset. Seems like forever since we had a good Oline. I'd tweak your Draft though:

1 - OLB
2 - OT
3 - CB - need another good young CB
3 - G
4 - RB/WR that can PR/KR
5 - C
6 - ILB
7 - QB

I don't think RB is that big of a need. I like a combination of Grant/Starks.

Hopefully Flynn performs. A couple more top 100 picks would be great.

Newhouse's back raises red flag - he may be ok but i don't think we can count on him.

Clifton & Wells probably return.

I'm starting to think I'd like to see best available out of OT/G/OLB for the first 3 rounds. Those are now my top 3 positions of need. CB is a some what distant 4th.

I think Blackmon although a freak athletically and imo might end up being better than say Michael Crabtree is one of our last needs right now. Even though Driver is getting old, the talent alone of James Jones and Jordy will make up for it if we give them enough reps. No doubt either of those guys given a good amount of snaps can be a very good #2 WR in this league.

The thing I want to see is to find the replacement for aging Tauscher and Clifton. Although Clifton got named to the Pro Bowl, anyone that knows anything about football knows that Clifton did not really perform at a PB level this season. He did have some very solid games but with all the injury history and age, I think we need to find someone else to come in. Maybe Bulaga slides over to his more natural LT position, even if thats the case I would want Castonzo from BC or Carimi from UW. I think Carimi playing RT would be an excellent pick up. And with his experience at UW, I would have no problem sticking him in at Day 1 as the starting RT. Those are 2 pretty good bookend tackles that we could have for the next 6 or 7 years to go along with Sitton.

3. Kerrigan

That would be my top 3 at this time

How bad is Bulaga been the last few weeks? I still like the dude, but his future might be inside at LG next year. My question is, if we let Colledge walk and Bulaga moves inside, what do we do at RT?

he's been bad but don't see a move inside. He'll be an OT - but to answer your question - Lang, maybe Newhouse - tho i think Lang is the one to move inside.

I have zero faith in Newhouse, saw nothing in preseason to think differently....with guys like Lang, Sitton, and Bulaga...you always saw upside, with Newhouse nothing. I really believe that Tt has been changing his philosophy over the past few years in regard to o-lineman, wanting bigger, more physical players, he needs to add at least 2 starting quality players through the draft...or gasp....free agency.

I thought Newhouse looked very promising at OT in the preseason, xTitan. He really only had one game where I didn't think he completely controlled the guy lining up opposite him. Great feet for a guy with his build.

I recall hearing good things about Newhouse, too.

Also, I read a stat that compared the size of the linemen TT drafted early on, vs the size of the linemen he is drafted recently, and the more recent picks were much bigger guys.

what I remembered was that he struggled mightily at RT, that would be his position moving forward, he does not have elite enough talent to be a very good LT in this league, but you are correct, the Packers see something, although they have also seen something with a couple other OT failures.

I agree with AYT

Newhouse was drafted initially was tried at guard and struggled there in camp i remember reporters saying. They shifted him to LT in the preseason, i remember being pleasantly surprised how well he looked. Whether he can do anything against starters is obviously a completely different task. Even if he only develops into a solid backup tackle though, that's fine for a 5th round pick.

Bulaga is my main concern, he's been flat out terrible the last four straight games. Rodger Saffold was taken with the 1st pick in the second round by the Rams and he's starting at LT for them and not struggling like Bulaga is. I watched him tonight and he looked very solid in pass protection, plus he had a thicker tackle looking body. Ted may look back at this draft and regret taking Bulaga over Saffold.

Not sure I'd be comfortable with Bulaga at LT going into next year after some of his recent performances.

I think he has the talent to be a good starter in the NFL, he just might be starting at a position other than LT.
