McGinn: Woodson play declining

Post#1 » by SugarRay34 » Sun Dec 19, 2010 5:13 am

I am paraphrasing in a way there but since it is a Packers Insider article I cant post it. Pick up the local paper tomorrow and it is an excellent read. Tons of stats about practice time, penalties, situations he has been put in.

What are your guys thoughts on it overall. Can Woodson still be a good corner in the league? Is is just injuries or is the old age starting to get to him

One glaring stat that I will post regarding practice time. Last year Woodson fully participated in 88% of friday practices. Which is the day involving 2 minute defense, nickel, and dime package work. this year only at 50%. And overall practice time has decreases 27%

Somewhat... I mean he played out of his mind last year.

But for the most part, he has been as solid as he has ever been. Just wish he had more pick sixes this season

Exactly, there was bound to be a decline compared to last year. His 2009 was insane. He's still very solid. With Collins and Burnett I don't see a spot for him at safety. I do think we need to draft a CB fairly high next year.
I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

I disagree that we need to pick a CB high. That is how we got Pat Lee and Underwood. Then you get a guy like Sam Shields as a UFA and he has been better than both. I agree that we need to get more cornerback depth because Woodson will likely continue to drop off every year until the end of his career, just disagree that it necessarily needs to be a high draft pick.

If Woodson was in his mid 20's we would have seen a decline from last season,he was out of this world in 2009,would be pretty much impossible to repeat a season like that even if a guy is in his prime.

He's been solid this year and still has a few good seasons left,I hope we can get him and Driver A SB ring before they retire.

This is what I think sucks about the packers injuries. They will be good for a while, but Woodson is not going to be playing at this high of a level for much longer. No one knows how much he left has in the tank.

Before he retires, leaves town, I really want to get a super bowl for the guy. More so than any other player on the roster

Woodson hasn't been terrible this year and Jason Wilde has said that Woodson has been nursing nursing a nagging turf toe injury which severely limits Woodson's ability to at least practice sometimes.

That said, Charles to me has started to show his age and if you were unable to read that column by McGinn, he pointed out that the Packers defensive coaches have tried semi-hiding Woodson from matchups outside where his declining speed has been exposed this year. When covering receivers inside from the slot, Woodson doesn't have to worry as much about a fast receiver simply running past him on a go route.

Either way, i hope a corner is added in the offseason simply for depth because i have little to no confidence in Lee or Underwood if an injury pressed them into prominent playing time.

I do agree though that off all the Packers, Woodson and Driver are two guys that i respect immensely and are all a fan could want in players who represent the Packers franchise.

He might have lost a step but hes still a great blitzer and a great tackler from the cb spot.

He lost a step, but is still smart enough to be a quality starter. It's like Jordan in his final years, he lost a step but was crafty enough to still get his.

There's this video from the 2009 preseason where Rodgers walks up to Woodson and Harris on the sideline and says "It seems like we've got a pretty good team here." Woodson nods and Harris says "Yeah, for sure." Rodgers turns to Woodson and says "What are you thinking?" Woodson turns and says "Man, I'm thinking Super Bowl. That's all I'm looking for man, a Super Bowl."

I might be paraphrasing slightly because I can't seem to find the video, but it really showed me where Woodson's head was at. He goes on to win DPOY that year and continues to be focused and driven. I love that attitude, and I hope we get him a ring.
