Woodson at S soon?

We've all talked about it.
Burnett & Peprah would be amazing depth at S. One of them would come in for nickel to have Wood at his preferred slot position. Woodson would probably slide to CB if either Tramon or Sam were hurt. Still need another CB for depth.
http://packersnews.greenbaypressgazette ... draft-pickThe Shields factor
That was another shrewd game plan by Dom Capers: Pulling Charlie Peprah in base and replacing him with Shields. That allowed Charles Woodson to lock up on a tight end or play on the edge. And it took Greg Olsen, the Bears’ tight end, out of the game.
At this point, Woodson probably matches up better on a tight end than a wide receiver. Plus, when he was on the edge, he was taking on lead blockers, and other guys were making the tackle. He had a heck of a game. Shields has virtually become an every-down player. And having two good corners like Williams and Shields allows the Packers to do more one-on-one stuff and blitz more. And they’re less vulnerable when they blitz.
If Capers had to run Bush out there, it’s a different ballgame. Shields gives Capers so much more flexibility. Capers doesn’t have to worry about covering home base first. In other words, he doesn’t have to figure out where the other team’s offense can hurt his defense before installing all his special stuff. If you’re scared of putting a corner in one-on-one coverage, that’s where you have to start in your weekly preparation. You leave that guy on an island, it can be six points.
Obviously, on defense, it all starts with Clay Matthews. But it’s the corners who have allowed Capers the flexibility each week to game plan to take away the other team’s strengths and not worry first about covering up his defense’s shortcomings.
Most teams have one good corner. Having two is a real luxury. And to have three has to be a coach’s wildest dream. Plus, without Shields, Capers wouldn’t have the flexibility to do what he does with Woodson. Against the Bears, Woodson was playing the role that Brandon Chillar played early in the year, and playing it better.
By blitzing Shields, Capers also added another wrinkle to his defense that Pittsburgh is going to have to prepare for. And the beauty is Shields is so fast, he doesn’t have to tip it off that he’s coming. When he shot that window on his sack, he closed ground so quickly, it was startling.

It's scary to think that Shields could turn out to be a better player than Tramon has become. Shields is an amazing athlete and is already a very good player. He's a rookie and it's his second year playing corner.
What a find by TT.

Woodson is already somewhat of a safety. The last few weeks it's been Shields and Tramon covering the outside, Woodson playing in the box and over the slot. I think it's a great role for him.

Nnamdi Asomugha in the offseason = dynasty. You can't tell me he wouldn't love to join our team and I bet he'd even take a paycut to get here. Woodson, Collins, Asomugha, Williams, and Shields would be absolutely sick on passing downs.

Asomugha is a pipe dream, IMO.
It's not going to happen unless he takes a massive pay cut.

If he truly wants to play on a winner, I think we could get him with Woodson money.

Yeah, he's going to have half the league offering him every dollar they have available to play corner for them. It's fun to think about though.

I think if we win the Superbowl, and Asomugha is true to his words, he would have to have the Packers at the top of his list. If he would take little less to play for a contender, then why not Green Bay

It would really be amazing. I would just play in the nickle pretty much every down...
DE: Jenkins
NT: Raji
DE: Pickett
OLB: Matthews
MLB: Bishop
OLB: Walden/Jones/Zombie
CB: Tramon
CB: Asomugha
CB: Shields
S: Collins
S: Woodson
If we could somehow draft another stud OLB, that would be the best defense ever.

I could see him being the highest paid defensive player in the league. Lots of people actually believe he'll be back with the Raiders if money is what he's interested in.
But I'm not so sure he wouldn't take a little less to go to a contender. You never know what the effect of playing for the Raiders for your entire career can do to you.

Right. But the Packers aren't going to offer him a 'little less'. I'm guessing they will offer him a lot less.
I'm thinking like $6-$8 million from the Packers. Most other teams will be offering him $12+ I would think.

It's pretty much common knowledge that Nnamdi Asomugha isn't going to go to the highest bidder (unless it's a contender). He wants to win, he has never had a winning season at any level of football, not even high school. He's made a ton of money already so he doesn't need to be the highest paid CB in the league. Remember Revis held out because he wanted Asomugha money and the Jets didn't want to pay that much and were kind of irritated that the Raiders offered so much to a CB, thus rasising Revis' value. There is no way he returns to Oakland.

He has already said it's a possibility he returns to Oakland.

That may be true, but there is no way he actually goes back.

If the Packers realistically want Nnamdi, they would have to give up Jenkins. Its maybe worth it if Jolly and Neal are coming back, but I've come around on this and would prefer to keep Jenkins given how good Shields is playing.
Even without Nnamdi, this team is going to be a juggernaut for the next few years. Offensively, the Packers lost two of their most important weapons in Finley and Grant. Quarless could potentially make the same jump as Finley. Starks seems to be a solid player going forward. Defensively, just adding Neal, Jolly, and Burnett makes a huge difference. It gives Capers so many different defensive options and it allows all the players to stay fresh. Jolly also was really solid last year; he maybe doesn't have the same sack numbers but I think he led the NFL in battered down passes. Shields could make a huge jump between year one and year two. Plus, its probably safe to say that TT will add an impact player for the offense and defense. If he can find an OLB to play opposite Clay, this might be the best defense in history, at least up there.

Another reason I don't forsee TT going after Asomugha is that we have a lot of our own players to potentially take care of. I don't know their plans for Jenkins so I guess that's a variable right there. However, the Claymaker is probably in line for a big money extension soon and while it's too soon for Shields, if he has another year like this it will be time to starting thinking about him too. That's not even considering anybody on the offense. I'm not sure how much money we have to work with, but it can only go so far.

Yep, TT will almost certainly take care of our own guys first and foremost. To me I would think that is very comforting for the players on the team, you know if you play well the Packers will take care of you. Players have to appreciate that style.

I'm no capologist. I don't know what the Packers situation looks like. But I do know that under the previous CBA it was possible to get incredibly creative with contracts in the form of bonuses. If the Packers wanted to keep their own guys happy and go out and get Scrabble, I don't doubt it could be done.

I really hope a new CBA is done before the draft mainly so the Packers can trade Flynn.

The Packers have set them up very favorably assuming the next CBA has similar salary cap rules, a lot of the new contracts they gave out this year had large bonuses that go to the uncapped year and then smaller salaries going forward, the players get their money up front, the Packers are in a good cap situation, it was win-win for all parties involved.
The bonuses situation was if you write basically an unreachable goal into the contract as an incentive(for instance I think Kampman's last contract with the Packers had a clause for blocking 4 punts gave him an extra $1-2 million) and they don't reach it then you can add that to the following years cap. It originally counts against the current years cap so you can only do it when you have cap room in the current year.
For instance had they put a clause in Tramon's new deal this year that said if he returned 5 punts for a TD he gets an extra $2 million, that would have initially counted against this year's cap but since he didn't hit it then the Packers get an extra $2 million in cap room next season. Now that one isn't even necessarily unobtainable since Tramon does return punts but they put silly bonuses in contracts all the time to get extra cap room for the future.
I'm sure there are other loopholes but that one was really used a lot.
