I think I'm going to reserve judgement on this pick until I see if we get a defensive end. I think that McPhee would have been a good pick in this region of the draft. If Ted has a guy in mind, that is fine. This has to be a bit of an indictment against Quarless and how he produced with Finley out.

So is it Quarless or Crabtree that could be on the chopping block, then?

Wow, I didn't think they would go TE, but this is a classic BPA kind of pick. Love this selection.

Williams is a highly-productive, hard-working tight end prospect with outstanding character who was one of the key components of Arkansas' dangerous passing attack over the last few seasons. Doesn't possess adequate NFL tight end height but should be able to fit in nicely as an H-Back. Will make a lot of plays finding open spaces against zone coverage but can be neutralized by athletic safeties or linebackers in man coverage. Is a gritty player willing to make tough catches in traffic. Works really hard and is effective in the running game. Williams should expect to be a mid-round selection.

I think you could keep both Quarless and Crabtree. It wouldn't hurt carrying 4 TE's on the 53 man roster.

Jennings, Driver, Nelson, Cobb

Jackson, Grant, Green, Johnson, Kuhn

Finley, Quarless, Crabtree, DJ Williams.

How many skill players are we gonna keep?

"Many analysts gave Williams second-to-third round grades, so it's blatantly obvious Williams will be considered a steal on Day 3 and has the potential to be a situational tight end in the league for many years to come. "

Bob McGinn Write-up:

Three-year starter. "Very good receiver," one scout said. "May have the best hands of the bunch. He's talented. He's like Dustin Keller, who went in the second round (late first round, '08) to the Jets." Finished with 152 catches for 1,855 yards (12.2) and 10 TDs. "He's more of a fourth-round pick," another scout said. "But, man, I'll tell you, every time I saw him I was impressed. Games, Senior Bowl, combine. All he does is catch the ball." Won the Disney Spirit Award given to the nation's most inspirational player. Overcame a tough upbringing in Little Rock, Ark. Taught himself to play the piano at 8. "Just small," a third scout said. "I don't know if you could line him up as an H-back in the backfield and lead (block) with him."

Maybe we can keep 4 TEs again. I really would like to keep Quarless and Crabtree.

McGinn is also convinced TT won't pay Finley big money. Interesting pick.
I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

I don't see how anyone could be that surprised at this pick. Time after time TT proves he doesn't necessarily care about need and will take the best player on the board, especially in the later rounds.

Goal line and short yardage tight end that we needed to compliment our current stable. None of those guys were strong blockers to help us convert on short yardage and could pull the block-slip for TD's/Conversions. We had all lanky finesse TE's.

When I talked to my father about the draft, he said he found a statistic that pretty much shows why Ted Thompson is so good in the draft. He might not hit every time in the early rounds, but it stated that we are 3 times more likely to find a 5 year player (not necessarily a starter) in the late rounds than most teams.
