We have an offseason thread and a labor thread, so feel free to merge if needbe but it doesn't seem like we have a thread dedicated to just Packer FA moves, etc.

Lets kick it off with:

Adam Schefter
K Mason Crosby has agreed to terms with the Packers on a 5-year deal.

I like it.

Glad to have Crosby back. He isn't the best but he's better then any thing else available.

According to a source familiar with the negotiations, the deal is worth $14.75 million and includes $3 million of guaranteed money.

The contract puts Crosby in the upper echelon of kickers in the National Football League just below top-paid kicker Sebastian Janikowski of the Oakland Raiders.

Rodgers pitching to keep Jones.

Rodgers calls James Jones 'priority No. 1'
Many of us presumed the Green Bay Packers were prepared to let receiver James Jones move on via free agency. I, for one, have been among those who wondered if the Packers would commit market-level money to a pass-catcher when Greg Jennings, Donald Driver, Jordy Nelson and Jermichael Finley will all be on the roster in 2011.

Well, none of us asked Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

Appearing Tuesday on ESPN 540 in Milwaukee, Rodgers lobbied for Jones' return in the strongest terms imaginable.

"James is extremely talented and he's a guy that I think we need to bring back without a doubt," Rodgers said. "He should be priority No. 1 and I mean that with all my heart. He really should be priority No. 1. We don't win the Super Bowl without him and we need him."

Asked about Jones' well-documented drops last season, Rodgers said: "Physical mistakes can happen. Yeah, it's frustrating, but James made a ton of big plays for us [last] season and I think his best football is in front of him."

Whoa.

General manager Ted Thompson doesn't typically consult with players on such matters and Rodgers admitted his job isn't to make such decisions. But when the Super Bowl MVP speaks up forcefully on a personnel issue, it's worth listening to. If nothing else, we know Rodgers will be quite disappointed if Jones moves on.

There are a number of high quality receivers available, and the market has yet to develop. It's possible the Packers could wind up with Jones at a bargain price. We'll see.

That's a pretty high contract for a kicker.

Yeah we've talked about Rodgers comments in the other thread but we can talk about them here as well.

I don't think Crosby is a top tier kicker but we don't really have any options and relative to other positions he doesn't eat up that much cap space. It's tough to find kickers. Lots of guys kick well in camp but until they do it in the cold, with pressure, they aren't worth anything.

Crosby has one of the better legs for kickers. As far as making FGs though hes at the bottom and one of the worst in the NFL. I dont trust Crosby anytime he kicks. I consider him a avg kicker at best.

I've always been a fan of Crosby so I'm glad we locked him up. He's got the leg, hopefully he can become a little more accurate on his longer fg attempts.

I wouldn't go that far, but he does need to improve his accuracy. I'd rather have a kicker with a strong leg and hope he develops the accuracy though. It's a lot easier to do that than it is to gain leg strength, IMO. Similar to it being easier to become a better jumpshooter than a better athlete in the NBA.

Yeah, the contact for Crosby might be a bit high, but a lot of that has to do with timing. As other good kickers get new contacts, he'll move back down the list from a relative standpoint.

If you don't like Crosby, just take a look at some of the kickers other teams are forced to run out there. There was really no choice but to keep him.

We're only going to need him for PATs anyway.

It's high now but like you said it'll be reasonable in the big picture plus any kicker with a better % will demand more money so in fact Ted in all his wisdom forced the other teams to spend more money (resources) . Wise move Ted

Feel like Crosby is only an average placekicker but has a huge leg. Good to have a guy who can hammer kickoffs and be decent with fgs. You could compare him to a ss with crazy range and error problems.

Back in the last few years Longwell was in GB, it was pretty @#%#@# irratating watching the oppenent start at the 40 yard line every possession. I agree it would be good if Crosby could get over the 80% mark, but especially now that KO's are moving up to the 35, his deep kickoffs are invaluable. We may very well see games where GB's oppenents never return a kick - all touchbacks.

So who is next, is it James Jones?

I've never understood some of the hate on Crosby. Is his percentage "great"? No, but to call him terrible or one of the worst just shows that you are ignorant of what else goes around in the league.

A good portion of his misses are fairly long field goals. 33% of his misses last season were from beyond 50 yards. MM has a lot of confidence in him and has no problem sending him out for a 53 yard field goal in a wind.

Last year Crosby missed 6 and 4 of them were from 40+ so only 2 of them that he missed were "gimmes".

He was also 46/46 on PAT, which you expect but not all kickers were perfect on PAT.

We could certainly do a lot worse than Mason Crosby kicking field goals for us.

Here is a career field goal percentage for the entire NFL where Crosby comes in a #44

http://www.pro-football-reference.com/l ... career.htm

It certainly looks like we are in the golden era of kickers as most of the top of that list is active guys right now.

Crosby is fine and I'm glad we have him back. His below average accuracy is an issue, as is the fact that he's 1-4 on game winning kicks. But he's got a big leg and we shouldn't see many balls returned for the foreseeable future.

He got overpaid, but in the end it doesn't mean much as we're talking about a kicker's salary.

http://blogs.greenbaypressgazette.com/b ... deceiving/

Basically echoes Chuck's post.

It’s no surprise that kicker Mason Crosby re-signed with the Packers.

Crosby told the Green Bay Press-Gazette’s Rob Demovsky yesterday that he had every intention of re-signing with the team, that he loves it in Green Bay, and was only waiting for the Packers to make him an offer.

Crosby has a powerful leg but there has been some concern about his slightly below-average 78.1% career field goal average. Most teams like to see their kickers make 80% or more of their field goals.

But in Crosby’s defense, 21 of his 137 career field goal attempts have come from 50 yards or longer, and those lower percentage kicks have brought down Crosby’s average.

Packers coach Mike McCarthy hasn’t hesitated to send Crosby out to attempt long field goals because of his strong leg. And why not? Crosby’s long kicks in each of the past four seasons have been from 53, 53, 52 and 56 yards. Overall, Crosby has made 10 of 21 field goals from 50 yards or longer.

Inside 50 yards, Crosby has made 97 of 116 field goals (83.6%). The Packers clearly factored that into the equation when they decided to offer Crosby a five-year contract that averages nearly $3 million per season.

In addition, kicking at Lambeau Field in cold weather and swirling winds is no picnic and has also worked against Crosby’s overall career average.

The Packers have never wavered in their support of Crosby, and it showed when it came time to show him the money.
