Poll: James Jones or Jordy Nelson or Neither

Post#1 » by PkrsBcksGphsMqt » Thu Jul 28, 2011 6:30 pm

Assuming both would get the same amount of money and we can only keep one.

Inspired by this:

I've always preferred Jones to Nelson. They BOTH have issues dropping the easy catches but I think Jones is better at making the difficult catches. They are pretty close, I just prefer Jones. It's not like Nelson is locked up for the long term, we basically have to decide on one or the other (or neither) and I'm in the boat that would take Jones over Nelson.

We need a poll. I like Jordy a little better.

Nelson. Better size, better speed. I think Jones makes the more spectacular catch but Nelson finds himself open more often.

Would prefer to keep both.

I'd prefer to keep both, assuming they would both be paid reasonable amounts.

As to who I think is better... I guess I'd go with Nelson because I think he's open more consistently.

Jones. I think Nelson has slightly better hands but Jones is better at making the tougher catches in the endzone and gets more separation. They are pretty close though. I'd prefer to keep both, but to me keeping money for Finley and Sitton is well above keeping either.

Nelson on the cheap > overpaying for Jones.

Better overall player? James Jones.

And Jennings since we will want to give him another extension next summer. His contract is up after next season.

I wish we would have had another pick in the 4th or 5th that we could have used on another WR prospect.

I prefer Jones but it's also about the $$ each would get. Jennings is expensive and will be more expensive in 2 years. Finley will be very expensive. How much cash do you put into the receivers/WR is the question. TT's MO may very well be to pay one or two guys and then just keep developing receivers. Let Jones go and hope Cobb develops. Maybe a year from now we will have drafted another WR high and let Nelson go.

One thing TT has almost always done and that's lock up guys BEFORE they hit free agency. One exception is Crosby, his agent said they couldn't lock him up because there were limitations as to how much they could give him as an extension vs as a free agent.
I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

That's tough, but I guess Jordy because I don't think Jones will ever stop dropping the easiest of receptions.

What makes you think Nelson has better hands when his drop rate is even higher than Jones?! Give me Jones everyday and twice on Sunday.

Never said Jordy had better hands. Jones can make some of the toughest catches (See 2nd Atlanta game), but so can Jordy (see first Atlanta game). I think Jordy can improve his drop rate to be better than Jones'. Jones and those wide open drops bother me more than Tramon muffing punts.

You forgive Jordy for his wide open drops but hold them against Jones to a very strong degree?

It's also possible that in two years, Ted would rather let Jennings walk than give him another big contract. In two years Jennings will be 30, if he asks for a huge extension it wouldn't shock me at all if Ted said i'll pass, depending on the state of the WR core.

If contracts are equal this isn't even a serious question.

Jones obviously, and I am a huge Nelson fan.

Yup. If TT can get Jennings for something like 3 years, $27-$33 million I bet he will. But if Jennings wants more years or more money, I doubt he's back with the team... and I'd agree with that move because of his age. I wouldn't really want him tied up for big money beyond 33.

I think over the next 2-3 years the WR core is going to have some pretty big changes. Driver will be gone, Jennings will likely get overpaid by someone and I think only one of Jones/Nelson will be here. Randall Cobb is the start of the 'rebuild' at WR and I think they view him as a slot guy kind of in the mold of Driver. I think either Nelson/Jones will be the no. 2 and then I think TT will try to draft a legit no. 1 WR at some point.

In addition, we obviously have receiving talent at TE which will help a lot in Finley, Williams and Quarless.

I think the more faith the franchise puts into Jones, I think the better he performs. If he were go into the season named the number 2 wideout, I think you see his drop rate decline substantially. I've just got a hunch he's in for a break out next season whether it's with us or someone else.

Oh, I see what you mean. I honestly can live Jones' drops so long as he makes up for it with the big plays. I want to keep both of these guys but that's not an option in this thread. SO I just said Jordy because I think he can improve his drop rate to be better than Jones' drop rate. Totally over that super bowl drop....

Honestly, I thnk JJ and Jordy are dang near the same players. JJ gets a bad rap because of the timing of his drops / the Bears fumble.

Assuming we lose JJ, I think it's just a matter of timing. With the Pack against the cap, Jordy signed on the cheap, and an exciting RC knocking on the door in Cobb, we just don't have a lot of room for JJ.
