Report: Philbin hired as Dolphins HC

Post#1 » by Captain Erv » Fri Jan 20, 2012 11:32 pm

Good for him and his family during this dark time.

Source: Dolphins to hire Joe Philbin

ESPN.com news services

The Miami Dolphins plan to hire Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator Joe Philbin as their coach, a league source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

Philbin interviewed twice with the Dolphins, once on Jan. 7 and again on Wednesday. He interviewed Thursday for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coaching vacancy, a league source told Schefter.

Philbin decided to remain in consideration for the Dolphins job despite his son's recent drowning in a Wisconsin river. After spending a week away, Philbin rejoined the Packers on Sunday for the divisional playoff loss to the New York Giants.

Nice to see he will get an opportunity to be a head coach.

I wouldn't be surprised if Matt Flynn is a Dolphin next season after this hiring.

Yup, I fully expect Matty Flynn to be the Dolphins QB next year. That was my initial reaction. Maybe Joe convinces management that he's worth a good pick. :)

Great news for Joe. Happy he got some good news during such saddening times.

Good for Philbin. Hope he does well.

I think Flynn could really transform that team in a good way. Does anyone know what draft pick we would get if he signs with Miami?

Nothing this year unless we tag and trade him. Maybe a comp pick next year, but the formula for how that's determined is notoriously mercurial.

Clements is possible. Better not be Edgar Bennet.
I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

Flynn was the first thing that popped into my mind, also. Naturally, behind being happy and congratulatory for Philbin. Well deserved.

Thanks! Wasn't sure how that process went.

Read on Twitter tonight that Mike Sherman was Philbin's high school English teacher and gave him his first grad assistant coaching job at Tulane. I never knew that. Kind of cool.

Between Philbin going to Miami and McKenzie possibly hiring Moss or Perry, our coaching staff might get pretty cleaned out.

I'm glad he got the job. Miami was my #1 choice for Flynn, so hopefully that's where he ends up now.

Coaching staff turnover is normal for a successful franchise. And being a successful franchise where coaches move up the ladder also allows us to attract good assistants. MM will have no problem finding good replacements.

Really hope the 2 guys we can keep on this staff are Clements on the offensive side and Darren Perry on the defensive side. Perry has a future DC/head coach written all over him. Very knowledgeable it seems like and gets his message across. Very highly thought of. I assume Moss is going to go. And with Capers retiring most likely within the next 2 years would love to see Perry named associate head coach and have him be the DC in waiting once Capers hangs it up.
