OT: Joe Paterno Dead At 85
Real this time it appears:
http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-400_162-573 ... ead-at-85/
Disappointing that one of the icons of the sport will have so much controversy surrounding him at the time of his death, but I still hope he RIP.
It's crazy, it seems like this happens all the time for older people who just leave a profession that was their life. It's almost as if they don't know what else to do and their entire system shuts down as a result. I think it's part of the reason so many hold on for as long as they can. It makes me think about my grandpa on my dad's side, he's run a garage door repair business in Madison Lake, MN for around 60 years. He's mid 80's and still doing manual labor full-time. Its all he knows.

I don't care one way or another. He's not the saint he's being portrayed as on the ESPN lovefest I'm watching now. He's just a football coach. RIP.
This was already being discussed in the college FB thread but there isn't much going on in football so we'll leave this thread up.

I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

I think it's the same thing as the 'they'll hold on long enough to say their goodbyes' pheomena that you hear about (and I can attest to). It is amazing how the body works.

Definitely thought this would happen after all of the controversy and him losing his job, just didn't expect it to happen quite this soon. This doesn't change the awful things he let happen on his watch, but the man should be remembered for what he accomplished for the game of football.
RIP
RIP

Yep, just this past Thanksgiving, my grandpa knew everyone was coming in to town for the holiday which we normally didn't do for Thanksgiving, he hung on and passed away around noon on Thanksgiving day giving everyone just enough time to get there and say their last goodbyes. It is crazy how your body can hold on until there is that one last thing that needs to be done.

The man's legacy is completely ruined in my eyes. I've seen articles saying that his "legacy outweighs the scandal" . Thats bull. No legacy can outweigh the fact that a man protected a child molester for 15 years. As cold as it is to say, I'm kind of indifferent to the news of him dying.

a similar thing happened right around christmas with my grandma a few years ago. there were lots of people at the hospital for days and then people went home to rest a little, she died.

Bear Bryant retired at 69. After retiring he was asked what he was going to do now that he wasn't coaching any more. He said "probably croak in a week." He died a few weeks later and only one day after having a completely healthy physical. Joe Pa was familiar with that story so some think that was a major reason why he continued to coach for so long.

You're right, Musberger talked about that very issue three years ago.

I'm more than a little disturbed by the love he is getting on all the social media outlets and tv. I have no sympathy for a man who knowingly worked alongside a potential child rapist.

This happened in my family just this past month. My grandmother passed away 3 days after Christmas this year. She was 85 and became pretty frail her last few months although no serious health problems. She was in a lot of pain just getting around and I knew deep down the last time I saw her she didn't have a lot of time. In retrospect, I really do think she was holding on for one more Christmas. I agree, it really is amazing how the body works.
As for Joe Paterno, it's a tragic situation all around. RIP Joe.

Maybe I haven't been keeping up on the deadspinning (I definitely haven't been), but when did this happen? I thought the McQuery incident happened after Sandusky had already retired.

Can't take his football accomplishments away but I can't stand how highly they talk up this guys character.

Re: OT: Joe Paterno Dead At 85
A writer for the Times or Post or somewhere out East, youngish guy who worked as a campus reporter at PSU, shed a lot of light on what a joke the culture was under Paterno, particularly in the last twenty years. His players could get away with anything and suffer few consequences.
I'm sorry he passed away, but the deification he's getting is a joke.

The whole thing that he passed the Sandusky thing to his superiors is a joke too since he ran that place.
