per Silverstein.
S Nick Collins won't play for the #Packers because they are not comfortable with him playing again after neck surgery.

The #Pachkers have told S Nick Collins that he will be released, according to a source.

Curious if this means he will retire... or if he is still trying to come back. It's sad to see Collins go, he was legit HoF material, IMO.

Also, the more I read about that Harrison Smith guy, the more I like him. He isn't a traditional safety... but in a league with guys like Gronk, Finley, Graham, etc. running around, I think he could end up being a new breed of safety.
If you play the 2-4-5 with that guy as one of the 5 and he matches up on TEs (and actually does a good job on them)/bolsters your defense against the run... that could be super valuable.

Well that's too bad. I'd like to hear more of the backstory to it - did he want to play again and they refused? Etc.
He was one of my favorite players so I'm pretty disappointed. Of course, though, I'd hate to see him paralyze himself.

Most memorable play from that season.

It shouldn't. It just means he wouldn't have passed their physical.

How can you tell whether somebody will pass a physical?

The Packers have always been a classy organization valuing the players as individuals first and foremost beyond what they are as football players. If Collins is cleared and can play again and wants to for the Packers it will be hard for him, but the Packers aren't obligated to take that risk on.
I absolutely love Nick Collins and this is heartbreaking for him as a person/player, hopefully he just retires and enjoys life with his family, if he was smart with his money he should be okay, plus there are plenty of opportunities in Wisconsin for Packers alumni.

This.
Hell, in a few years GB could hire him as an assistant.

Opinions of doctors and besides the physical part, it's a risk/reward situation. It's pretty admirable to me that the Packers care about their players and wouldn't want him to risk it.

I think it's garbage to take the decision out of his hands. There's no increased risk of paralysis here, and they can't keep him off the football field in any case. So what they're doing is forcing him to relocate if he wants to resume his career. In favor of their own comfort. I don't see how that's admirable.

This does suck, sort of torn, if the doctors say he can play, if he wants to play and would sign a waiver...would like him to have a chance, it is his life. I guess it will be interesting to see if any other teams gives him a chance.

I can pretty much guarantee another team picks him up.

This whole thing reminds me of Any Given Sunday. I can't blame the Packers at all here. If he gets hurt that's on your conscience. This is more than just football guys. And as someone who is on the verge of having my first child, I couldnt fathom risking my life for a game after I've earned enough money to live the rest of my life and guarantee a good living for my children.

I have zero problems with what the Packers are doing here.
