Wouldn't he be a perfect fit, or is it just me?

He's one of the better RBs in the league who is also a solid pass-catcher. He has a low center-of-gravity and can pound the ball when the weather gets cold as well.

What would be the asking price? We could offer Starks or Benson along with James Jones who would likely be their #2 receiver and a 3rd rd pick.

What do you think?

Others here are dead set against it but I'd put in a call if I'm Thompson. Even if you're only getting an elite back for three seasons, he could mean the difference between winning another Owl and not.

Tough call because we're talking about a boatload of cash for a guy who already has ~1500 carries.

I would probably throw in a couple of first round picks just to make sure it gets done.

In all seriousness I'm not opposed to the idea, I'm just opposed to the idea of what it will cost to get him. If we could add MJD in a vacuum sure but for the price of what it will cost I would pass.

Now if TT can use some Jedi mind tricks to get him for pennies on the dollar then we can talk.

For me, it's less about what we'd have to trade to get him than it's about what his contract's going to look like.

If it doesn't interfere with us signing Matthews, Raji, Jennings, extending Rodgers, keeping other core pieces around, etc. then I don't see the big downfall either. Though I still wouldn't give up a second or third for him... I view him as almost useless this year since he held out. If you need examples of RBs who have held out that see their production drop or get hurt... look at just about every RB that has ever held out.

In addition there is no telling when RBs will decline... especially with that much mileage on them. But usually it's anywhere between 27-30... and usually closer to 27.

That is going to be three really big contracts for Raji and especially Matthews/Rodgers. Mix in all of the other extensions which Ted has given out lately, i can''t see how Drew could be fit in there also.

Like I said, I'd do if it were still possible to work out those extensions. Ted knows more about the ins and outs of the NFL 'cap' than we do. If it isn't possible I wouldn't make the move.

This would most certainly dent our ability to extend people, but you have to ask yourself if there is a player we are looking to extend that you would give up to be able to extend a top 3 running back.

I would give the Jags a call, but I don't think anything will be worked out.

James Jones makes ~$3.1 mil, James Starks makes ~$500,000. MJD is set to earn ~$4.5 mil. I'd say extend him for 3 yrs at $6.5 mil/per. A couple million for a vastly improved running game.

I think we have guys who would take a little discount to accommodate a player like MJD. Perhaps Woodson could re-structure his $11+ mil/year deal?

If he was prepared to sign that kind of contract, I doubt if Jacksonville would be in this situation.

Agreed, I don't think he's holding out to get 3 years for around $20 million.

I wouldn't be opposed if the price was right and MJD wanted to take a discount to play on contending team but I think he wants one last huge contract. This is his 7th year in the league and has had 3 straight 300 carry seasons, not too eager to throw a ton of guaranteed money at the guy.

Given the makeup of our team, it would be absurd to pay for a guy like MJD. We can do something like that when AR starts to decline in his 30's. Right now, it is a huge waste of money. Our best offense includes only a token running game. I'm all for a much more effective running game when we use it, but we don't need a guy like MJD. In terms of value per actual dollar spent, we are one of the teams where he'd be least useful since we'd still pass the ball a ton.

The sad thing about our running game is that it should be a big play running attack, yet we get pathetic production on "explosive" runs (I think MM categorizes those as 12+ yards). Starks has nothing at the second level. He just runs into people. Green hasn't even shown the ability to get to the second level as a runner. He gets the hand off and just runs really fast until he gets tackled. He has no instincts. I'm very low on him. We haven't seen Saine enough in our regular offense for me to know how he runs, but the fact that he doesn't get an opportunity probably tells me all I need to know. Benson isn't a guy that is going to break off runs of 12+ very often, but he's a tough runner within 7-8 yards of the LOS. Tyler has flashed some solid instincts, but I haven't seen enough of him yet.

Put Benson's mind in Green's body and we'd have our RB. As it stands, we are going to have a **** running game again this year, which is too bad because even a RB only as good as a young Ryan Grant would be able to break off a ton of long runs against the personnel packages and defensive looks we face. We should be able to average 4.5+ YPC with our RBs, but we don't because we have a bunch of RBs who suck once they are beyond the first 3-4 yards of the LOS.

In other words, we should have made the trade for Lynch. Beef Mo.

Yeah, kind of seems like we maybe should have taken Helu or Hunter, but I still want to see more of Green as I think he'll be a good receiver at the least.
