The run defense was much better.
We owned the read option.

Without the two screw up turnovers we win this game.

A lot of positives in this game, but the safety play has to improve drastically.

Lacy and Finley spotted them too many points.

Our passing D was horrendous all around. But we played well otherwise.

I agree. Our safety play was some of the worst Ive ever seen. Jerron was brutal. I didnt think Burnett was that big of a difference maker but maybe he is.

Fair enough, I don't remember that far back. Turnovers suck.

One of the two safeties we played today will still be on the field when Burnett gets back. We looked beyond brutal covering anyone. They were finding ways to match up Davis and Boldin on our safeties on every play.

On the road against a great team, hostile environment, lose the turnover battle and still have a chance at the end. Even though it was a loss there are a ton of positives moving forward.

Guess there's a reason they gave Burnett a nice extension. Holy crap we need him back, Hayward too.

Over 200 to Boldin is a little disconcerting, but this is pretty much how I feel.

Would have been a whole different ball game with Morgan and Casey back there. SF had a lot of opportunities given to them (i.e., the magic 1st down off the personal fouls, the finley/lacy fumbles, all of Ross' returns) that hopefully won't be there in a rematch.

This is an improved squad, and, if nothing else, a much more disciplined team. Don't discount how much Burnett (let alone Heyward) helps this secondary. This was an encouraging day for us.

Very happy to see the running game come together late.

Oline held up quite well throughout. Not many front sevens are going to give our OT's a tougher test.

Definite positives on the O-line. Baktiari really held his own against Smith aside from going for an ill advised low block against him on our first drop back. Our pass rush was non-existent, but it also looked like we held back and wanted to consistently keep contain on Kaepernick. Safety play and inside linebacking play really hurt us defensively. Nelson and Cobb looked like themselves. Finley looked strong aside from the drop into a booted INT. Lacy just looked like he was going to get stuffed all day. The 49ers front 7 was 2 yards deep in our backfield for all of the first half. Definite positives, but the loss hurts since we were in the driver's seat with 6 minutes left and our offense/play calling let us down.

I was a little surprised that they kept throwing Ross out there. At some point, if you aren't a star, you need to sit for your mistakes, no?

Actually about as pleased as can be considering it was a loss. I thought the front seven played really well. Missing our two most important guys in the secondary killed us but nothing to be too concerned about this early.

More encouraged than discouraged. I look at this season as the start of a two year mini-window where I expect things to improve as the season progresses.

Tackles were good enough against outstanding opposition. D-Front was outstanding physically (and rotated well) against a very good OL. Receiving corps was more than adequate minus Jennings. Outstanding as usual from Clay, and Lacy at least got things going late when it mattered most.

Yes the safeties sucked, but letting the receivers run unchecked to their area of the field time and time again was horrible. Great job against the read option, but overcompensated for it a little by not having the corners concentrate more on the receivers closer to the line.

And the coaches just need to tighten it up. McCarthy's call to make it 3rd and 6 instead of 4th and 1 was Ray Rhodes-like. Not knowing where Boldin is on the final play (or much of the SECOND half) borders on absurd.

What a choke. They disappeared for the last 8 minutes up 4. They let SF score a touchdown in like 2 minutes. All they needed was a hold or at least to a FG. Nope. We let them score at will at the most crucial moment of the game.

And I know having Cobb back there is an injury risk but you have to put him out there if Ross is the next best option. He cost us so much field position today.

Yep. If you are willing to run Cobb out there as a running back, you might as well put him out there as a returner.
