Panthers Lead-Up

Post#1 » by LUKE23 » Mon Oct 13, 2014 3:57 pm

To me this game looked easier before the season started, but Carolina is a solid team.

The read option scares me more than anything. With both corners out, guys like Benjamin and Olsen also scare me. Ironically, their D hasn't been that great yet, currently allowing 26.2 ppg (24th), and 392.5 yards per game (26th).

They also have the worst run D in the league up to this point (5.5 yards per carry allowed), so I pray we see a ton of Lacy and Starks, and some long drives. If we can't get the running game going this week, it could be a really bad sign.

Judging by Carolina's performance this year I wouldn normally pick us to win this game... but if I had to bet money I'd guess Cam runs for 100+ yards. Matthews looked lost trying to stop Tannehill running, I have no idea what he's going to look like trying to stop one of the best running QBs of all-time.

Hopefully Clay gets his head out of his ass and plays a decent game... if he doesn't let Cam run all over us I think we win easy.

This is a game where we really need to stack the box and force Cam to throw it. Regardless of whether Tramon and Shields are playing, they don't have any quality receiving threats outside of Olsen and Benjamin. I think you need to trust House in man coverage against Benjamin and use Clay as a decoy and shadow Olsen (he sure as hell hasn't been effective defending the run this year so why not?).

That D-line is really missing Greg Hardy. Kuechly is a beast but he's really the only guy you have to worry about blocking when you run it up the middle. Like stated before, if we can't get our run game going against them, that's a pretty bad sign. Save for the blowout against Minny, our O-line has looked really bad in run blocking. Hard to put it all on Lacy when he has no holes to run through. Starks should get the majority of carries simply because he has the speed to turn the corner and is the more effective back when the line isn't opening up running lanes inside.

That said, I'm confident in a win. At home or away, Rodgers is locked in right now.

It all depends on the health of the CBs. It would be a game I would love for Tramon to cover Olsen. That defense has Kawann, Luke, maybe Star and that's it. I think we can demolish this defense. It has been, according to PFF, the worst defense we'll have faced so far this year and 3rd worst offense. We're also at home so that has to figure into it.

Greg Olsen shouldn't have played yesterday and when he did, he hurt himself even more.

If he plays on Sunday, it won't be the same Greg Olsen we are used to seeing. With that said, we have to stop that read option which kills us. Hit Cam on the read option, even when you know he doesn't have the ball. Make them not want to run that option again.

Stewart could be back but Williams is still going to be out for the Panthers this week.

Oddly enough, I'd shade to Cam on the read option. Let Fozzy Whitaker beat us himself if he has to.

Agreed....I don't understand how teams don't just crush the QB every time they run this play. Think about it, even if you let the running back take off for 3 separate 80 yards runs when that QB keeps taking the legal hits that team and other teams will refuse to run the read option against you ever again.

I don't think teams deliberately avoid crushing the QB on the read option.

According to McCarthy the injuries to Lattimore, Shields, and Williams are not going to be long term. Shields didn't have a tear and Williams didn't have any major damage in the ankle.

Great news.

The problem with crushing the QB on a read option is you don't know when or if you'll get called for a penalty. Yes, the QB is a runner on the play but with the way they protect QB's, a perfectly legitimate hit could be called unnecessary roughness and cost you 15 yards.

Hit them anyways. It is a legal hit, and the Packers could stand to gain some traction in the nasty department.

Read Option, Read Option, Read Option.

Stop the read option.

Cam had 17 carries 100+ yards. Stop the read option.

And I don't count stopping the read option by using Brad Jones as a spy.... :noway:

Fact:

The "Brad Jones as a spy" defense is the worst defense in the history of defense.

DEFENSE – We’ve got to limit Newton damage by run - Use Richardson as full time Spy – while playing as 4th LB on run downs and as dime on passing downs

RUN Downs – use Perry over Matthews / at least try Lattimore over Hawk

DL- Daniels – Guion – Boyd -------(rotate DJones & Pennel)
LB- Perry – Hawk – Peppers -------(rotate Lattimore & Matthews)
SPY- Richardson
DB - House-Hayward-Burnett-Dix -------(rotate Hyde)

PASS downs –
I dislike BJones but he can blitz & he’s best ILB in coverage we got - how pathetic is that

DL- Daniels – DJones (or Neal)
LB- Matthews – BJones – Neal (or Peppers)
SPY- Richardson
DB- House-Hayward-Burnett-Dix
NB- Hyde

OFFENSE
They will be expecting us to run. M3 will predictably oblige. But we should open with lots of quick 6-7 yard inside slants & screens and a few 8-10 yard curls. Then as game progresses sprinkle in the run with a couple of 1st down or 2nd & short long strikes.

Not really Panthers related, but the best player in Australian Rugby retired at 26 to pursue an NFL career.

We should sign this guy ASAP. Get him on the PS. If anyone is tougher than football players, it's Rugby players.

Kelvin Benjamin is questionable with a concussion.
