OT - First American to play AFL Jason Holmes debuting Saturday 22/08

I know a few here follow AFL (Australian Rules Football) or at least have seen it before, so thought you would like to know the first ever US born player Jason Holmes will debut for the St. Kilda Saints on Saturday night against the Geelong Cats in Melbourne.

Tall, athletic ruckman who has been decent at VFL (reserves) level. The Saints are out of the finals race so giving him a go for some good form in the lower league. Will be interesting to see how he goes and hopefully build a bit more interest in the game in America. A few other Americans developing on other teams also, mostly former basketballers picked up for their height and athleticism.

I'll try post some highlights of his game on the weekend.

P.S. if you are adopting a team it doesn't have to be St. Kilda, make it the Western Bulldogs who are basically the Bucks of the AFL. Young, exciting team with a low supporter base and income but huge potential. :D

Bulldogs are more like Minnesota in my opinion.
St Kilda is like Portland. Have been good in recent past, but always fall short of winning the Premiership.
Bucks are like Geelong. Why? Because I support both teams and... small markets, new ownership/board leading to success, rebuilding with youth.

Haha no way. Geelong have been a very successful club recently, 3 premierships in the last 8 or so years. Definitely doesn't mirror Bucks' recent success.

Seriously, if you have never seen AFL, give it a YouTube!

Yeah, the Bucks are more like the Western Bulldogs.

Can't be the Timberwolves who are like the Dogs. Minny has good kids, sure, but they still suck so far.

The dogs have shot up the ladder with their youth ala the Bucks.

I'm going to move this to the football forum but I'll leave a shadow topic here
I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

My girlfriend will kill me if I don't root for Essendon, so I think that will be the team that I follow lol. Her family is split between Essendon and something like Collingwood?

Really cool sport though; I went to one of the Essendon games when I was visited for the first time this year (it was a gigantic blowout against Geelong) and loved it. I would definitely be into the sport more if I ever move there.
