Jared Cook Expectations?

Post#1 » by HKPackFan » Mon Aug 29, 2016 3:58 am

I think Jared has had an excellent preseason, he's been productive regardless of which QB is throwing to him. It was also fun to finally see him working with Rodgers.

I think he picks up where Finley left off, without missing a beat. All summer he's been making nice 3rd down catches in preseason. His been beating his man, getting open, getting YAC, he's been getting open in the middle, doing everything we need a TE like him to do.

I'm convinced he's a big answer to some of our offensive woes, and coupled with a solid running game is going to help our WRs.

We discussed the free agency troubles coming up with 4 OL and Lacy, D. JOnes, Perry, and a few others. Well I think he's going to be a big free agent as well. He's going to be a top 10 TE this year which would put him in the $7 - $9 million per year conversation depending where he ranks. Not sure we can afford him with all the other needs we have, but he is a veteran help in his prime and we have no young up and coming guys underneath him (at least not real exciting prospects). MM does love his TEs.

Since he has gone on to FA and been burned with crappy teams, maybe he's more selective this time around and would consider only teams with top QBs, and GB could still be in the running if he feels he found a home here.

I'm not going to worry about 2017 too much, just want to see Jared excel and based on this summer I have no reason to believe he won't have a very good year.

If he plays well he prices himself out of GB. If he's only so so then he's probably not a huge priority to resign.

Viewing him as a one year rental and hoping for a monster year

This is probably the most realistic.

I'm hoping all our UFA's go crazy this year, and it's all in for a Super Bowl victory. Then we get a crapload of extra picks in the offseason and TT goes to town. That's the ultimate win scenario.

He's going to make great plays that make you think he is Gronk, and then run into your QB on a handoff.

If you can get him to be a somewhat competent blocker, then he's going to be a top 10 TE production-wise. Hell, he may even be that while only playing on passing downs. He's reportedly already got a great rapport with Rodgers, and in the preseason, you can already see how much of a difference having a legit weapon in the middle of the field does for the offense, even with Jordy not playing yet.

I'd love it if he could become a good blocker, but it isn't a necessity. He's here to open up the offense, and that's what I expect him to do. I think his numbers will be close to his best seasons in 2011/2013, but Cobb and Montgomery will benefit quite a bit from him. And yes, I'd be shocked if he was a Packer next year.

If he's a Packer next season he probably had a big year with Rodgers as his QB and opts for a discounted contract so he can continue playing with an elite QB.

I think he's the wild card and the key to making The Owl this year. I'm trying to temper my enthusiasm because last year Dick Rod had more catches and TDs than Cook has ever had. But Cook is more of a deep threat and more dynamic. We need him to be the Keith Jackson to Rodgers' Chmura.

Cook is so hard to figure out because he's played his entire career with scrubs throwing him the ball. His physical attributes are definitely there, so it will be interesting to see what kind of player he is when he has a two-time MVP throwing the rock.

If he explodes this year, and we don't win the Super Bowl, I wouldn't rule him out to resign at a discounted rate. He'll be 30 at the start of next season and, knowing what he knows about playing for teams without a legit QB, he might be more interested in the ring towards the end of his career. If he wants to chase the money, then all the power to him and get paid, but he'll have to do it elsewhere.

If healthy, I fully expect Cook to be the athletic field opener TE he is. I would hope for 60-70 catches 700-900 yards. Double digit TD's. And, a couple bouts of drops and blown blocking assignments. I don't think people realize what Cook can do now that he has A-Rod, a healthy Nelson, and a healthy Cobb. I'm excited to find out.

I think he finishes somewhere around 60 catches, 800+ yards and somewhere between 6-10 TDs. I think he is going to add a ton to our red zone play-calling. It will be nice to have a talented, big body near the goal line.

From the time we signed Cook, my only disappointment was that it was just a one year deal because i expect him to have a really nice season, but then become to expensive to keep given the other guys who also will be free agents.

I believe there is a one-year lag. lose after 2016 get pick after 2017. and probably not more than two picks.

With the amount of high price guys that are most likely going to walk, (I'm looking at you Oline in addition to Cook and Lacy if they have big years), the Packers will in all likely hood be looking at 3-4 high comp picks for the 2018 draft.

At least 2 Olineman will walk away for big paydays with starting roles. Possibly even 3. (Right there you're looking at probably a 4th and a 5th round comp pick at least)

If Cook has a huge year we don't really have the cap to pay him. (Add another 4th/5th round comp pick for him)

Thats 3 high comp picks right there minimum and I haven't even touched Lacy, Jones or Perry.

The NFL doesn't release a comp pick formula with low level guys getting grouped together to an extent and all that could get thrown out of whack if TT signs a UFA next offseason :) but high price FAs that leave that go on to fill significant starting roles with other teams are generally awarded there own individual, and relatively high, comp picks.

With our cap situation and the amount of guys we have heading into FA we're going to be swimming in comp picks in the 2018 draft

There are a total of 32 comp picks given away, and they are based on the contract the FA gets. Usually they are getting $10M per year contracts to produce a 3rd round pick. So, probably no 3rd round pick. If our guys get the 33rd or lesser contract in the NFL, we get no comp pick for that guy. Every team loses players, and I'd be very surprised if we got more than 3 picks. 3 would be nice.

If he stays healthy Cook will be the guy TT needed to get for this roster since 2006.
