Lions Leadup

Pack favored by 8

We'll play pissed. Don't know what to make of the Lions. My gut says we kill em, but this team is a mystery right now.

I don't know what to think. We needed a miracle to beat them last year. They beat us at home.

They beat the colts on a shootout 2 weeks ago, and lost in a 15-16 battle to the titans, I don't know what either of those games mean. I don't know the colts nor the titans at all. Do the colts still suck with Luck? I don't know.

We haven't been able to move the ball on anyone with regularity, and both games against the Lions last year the offense was sputtering.

Maybe we break out of our funk? Would definitely be nice. The 2015 hangover needs to go away.

Demovsky gets after McCarthy and his predictable offense.

McCarthy likely was referring to 2011, when the Packers led the NFL so many offensive categories it was difficult to keep a count, and Rodgers won the first of his two NFL MVP awards. That year, McCarthy changed personnel groups often. He still relied on the three-receiver, single-tight-end, single-back set but only at a rate of 45.2 percent of the snaps. There were games when he seemingly changed personnel play after play after play. He used four-receiver sets on 29.9 percent of his snaps.

The more McCarthy wanted to play faster on offense, the more he used the no-huddle which inherently limits his chances to change personnel from play to play.

Since 2011, his use of the "11" personnel group has spiked. Last season, he used it on 62.1 percent of his offensive players, according to ESPN Stats & Info. It was roughly the same in 2014 (62.3 percent) and even higher in 2013 (72.0 percent).

I saw yesterday that at one point McCarthy used 11 formation 30+ straight plays, or the equivalent of four drives.

This is asinine. They don't have a runningback who deserves more caries. If anything they deserve less. You're telling me you want to rely on Eddy Lacy and not one of the greatest QBs ever in order to win games? McCarthy's a clown.

To be fair, the Patriots use Blount a bit in certain games...but look their way. They have White and Dion Lewis (injured) and just "run" by flipping it out to them on the edge (NOT A GOD DAMN TOSS PLAY, EITHER). Glad McCarthy will probably figure this out in like 5 years.

Using the same formation 30+ times in a row is mind-boggling insane.

Yeah, there's absolutely no excuse for the offense to struggle without him in there. But, they'll probably find a way to.

Each week the offensive staff looks at tape and comes up with a game plan on Sunday night/Monday/Tuesday and they start installing it with the team on Wednesday. And maybe our game plan is top notch each week. The problem is the opponents defense is doing the same thing. But once the game kicks off there is (or should be) a series of adjustments when things aren't working as planned. Hopefully there are some contingency plans drawn up along with the original game plan. But it's imperative that Clements and Bennett go to McCarthy with alternatives during the course of the game. Either they are doing that and McCarthy ignores them or what they are coming up with is ineffective.

But the wildcard in all this is Rodgers and how often he's changing the play. It's great to give your experienced QB the green light to change things up based on what he sees at the line of scrimmage. But perhaps the defense is mixing things up enough at the line that Rodgers reads are off.

All I know is it's easy for us to sit here and criticize McCarthy, the playcalling, the receivers, the quarterback. In Lombardi's legendary words, "What the hell is going on out there?"
I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

Good post MD i agree. I kind of wonder if the lack of adjustments is stubbornness brought on by having such a good o all those years. Basically taking the mindset that were gonna run our stuff and make the defense adjust to us not the other way around.

The other issue i see is pretty much every team now tries to get physical with our wrs and accepts it will cause some penalties but that the refs cant/wont call them all. Im not sure if the solution is the wrs need to do a better job getting off the contact by the db or if scheme can help. Probably a combination of both.

Interesting. Not really sure what to make of it, but I guess it couldn't hurt?

I still contend that our lack of offensive proficiency might be a direct result of waiting until the play clock reaches it's end.

The no-huddle, quick strike, no sub, on your heals, keep you guessing offense was what Rodgers did best.

Need to get back into shape again and roll that shiz out again!!!

Rodgers has been a cadence King, but we need to see some balance to keep the opposition off balance.

Since McCarthy already has a playbook full of lateral pitches for Eddie Lacy am I to assume CJ Spiller will be brought in to run solely between the tackles? All the 4th and 2 divezzzz...

Trying to get excited and optimistic about this team but I just can't do it. Everything about our team seems stale. Wish we'd bring in a new coach this off season but I know we won't.

Nice. He's not quite the same as he was in '12, but he looked good with the 1st team Saints offense in the preseason. Really only a cut casualty because of NO's craptastic cap situation, right?

His big takeaway after the 15-1 year was not enough running plays. Been fixated on it ever since. Would rather have a pass catching back like a Woodhead and a situational hammer for short yardage. The 2nd guy could be Rip, but will we ever know? Hard enough to get Lacy short yardage carries.
