If you were allowed to change any rule in the NFL which would you change?

I would like to see:

Instead of declining penalties, adding it on like a personal foul. If a team goes offsides and you pick up 20 yards, add 5. If a team gets called for holding and you get a sack, move them back 10 yards more.

or

All replays done up in the booth in real time. Less time spent on replays, leaves less on the coaches to challenge and throwing flags when you know for a fact there is nothing to be challenged.

The opposing coach of whichever team the Packers are playing that particular week should be allowed to wear a hand buzzer at the end of the game.

Never understood why there can't be more than one personal foul on a play. If a team does two dirty plays, it should count for thirty yards. I think it's just asking for a situation where one flag is thrown and a "smart" player uses the opportunity for another shove.

Agreed, that kind of goes with mine. The fact that you have to decline penalties makes little sense to me. A penalty or multiple penalties should hurt a team as much as possible.

Celebrations or compounding fouls. Also, having fouls not cancelling each other out unless they are of equal value. Like if there is an personal foul on the D, but a holding on the O or some other smaller foul, they shouldn't just wipe each other out.

Pass interference isn't a spot foul and having referees be more willing to call offensive pass interference and laying off the weak defensive pass interference calls.

And holding and illegal contact penalties aren't automatic 1st downs.

I know that's more than one but **** all those rules.

Like hugging the ref is now a penalty?

A lot of people have touched one ones I would like changed.

Replay: College replay is so superior to the NFL it isn't even funny. Coaches challenges shouldn't be a thing.

Offsetting/compounding penalties: When a 5 yard offsides penalty will cancel out a facemask where someone rips them to the ground or something vicious. To add to this when a player gets called for a penalty for retaliating to defend their teammate. These things should be reviewable and if someone is just defending their teammate from the likes of Suh being dirty then the penalty should fall on the instigating player.

I'm sure there are others.

It's already too easy for offenses to move up and down the field. I'd rather create some rules that help the defense

I've always thought the half-the-distance-to-the-goal rule was dumb. If you commit a penalty on offense, just extend the line to gain by the proper yardage. So, if you're at your own 2, and you commit a false start, instead of backing you up to the 1, add five yards to the line to gain.

While I like this, I don't think it's enforceable. Chains are only 10 yards long. In this case, you would need a 15 yard chain to mark for a 1st down.

....no, you wouldn't. You'd just move the 10 yard chain forward, instead of moving the line of scrimmage backward as they would when they normally enforce 1st and 15+.

I agree that OPI should be called more, but I'm fine with DPI being a spot foul and the automatic 1st downs on those penalties. I actually think all of those should be spot fouls. I believe that the offensive team should be given a fair chance to complete a play, If you're interfering unfairly with that ability, I'm willing to give the offensive team the benefit of the doubt that the play would have been completed otherwise.

On the other hand, I think that roughing the passer is called waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too often in situations where the contact isn't severe and when there's like a second difference between the QB releasing the pass and contact. It's almost unfair to the defensive player to expect them to stop on a dime when they're gigantic freaks of nature going at full speed. I think it should be a measure of what's reasonable - if you're clearly headhunting or targeting the knees or hitting a QB well after they released the ball, that's one thing, but otherwise give the defensive player the benefit of the doubt.

It's not making the sport any safer to penalize guys for doing this because there is no way to change that behavior without specifically altering the nature of the game.
