Re: Cut Down To 53 Predictions
I would put Janis on the bubble but the way he played last night he is definitely moving in the direction of a lock.

ST is the main reason I had him down for a lock, one of the best gunners in the league. Packers notes put out a great article about the Gode addition all but assuring Janis stays on the roster.

Re: Cut Down To 53 Predictions
A few key situations that need to still play out.
Biegel possibly going on PUP
M. Adams time table to return
Barclay being injured week 1 means another C has to be on the roster

Re: Cut Down To 53 Predictions
Also roster has been set at 89 since since the DL from SEA failed his physical. Surprised they haven't brought in another OLB or DL

Re: Cut Down To 53 Predictions
My "Sitton" (shocker) cut for this year is Randall Cobb.
There's just too much talent on this roster at WR now, he has no future with us having to pay Adams next year, and I actually think the dude has lost a significant step.

It's not that strong Dupre/Yancy/Max are nice players but no where near worth keeping 7. Clarke will easily make P/S, but every year the writers are fixated on WR and hype these guys up. I'm not a big Cobb fan but MM values him way too much to let him go and he's more than likely going to be the PR at some point this season.

I think its unlikely this year. He is making 12.5M and has a dead cap hit of 6.5M if we cut him. Next year that dead space is only 3.5M so it becomes more likely depending on how he does this year.

Re: Cut Down To 53 Predictions
Cobb isn't getting cut. As Chuck said next year is more likely. His cap hit would be much less and Adams likely extension kicks in.
I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

It will be interesting to see how the new rule of one big cutdown after the final game plays out. There will likely be a mad scramble of moves.

Re: Cut Down To 53 Predictions
It would take a perfect storm of things for cobb to get cut.
He would have to look bad and like he's lost a step. Some of the young guys would have to look good. Adams would need to be extended. And they would have to be real comfortable with the other return options.

Re: Cut Down To 53 Predictions
Not sure we'll see any shocking cuts. A guy like Gunther could be gone but not sure that's shocking. Maybe even randle if some of the young cbs really shine and he struggles when back from the concussion. Or maybe ripkowski if that other fb kills it and they only keep 1.

Re: Cut Down To 53 Predictions
Cobb isn't getting cut. It's not even worth discussing. For all the WR talent the gap between Cobb and whoever would be deemed the #4 WR is MASSIVE.
Janis has looked better but far from a lock. His gunner skulls are way overplayed by this fan base though. He's a solid/good gunner but hasn't been great at it for over a year. If he makes the team it'll be because they don't trust Davis to catch the ball.
Really for all the talk about all this talent at WR I'll repeat something I said two years ago before Jordy went down. While there's some intriguing talent on the back end we are not really deep at WR. We have 3 guys that are proven legit NFL WRs and after that guys we hope can be legit players someday. If Jordy goes down this group will look an awful lot like it did the last time he went out unless Adams is able to pick up the slack. WR isn't deep. It's simply top heavy.

Just showed an article on Janis as a gunner, MM and zook call him a core ST. I agree with you on the back end of the receiver depth chart but Janis and Davis have nothing to do with one another on puny return

My reason for bringing up Davis is if he can manage to field the ball they'd choose the returner over the gunner when deciding on the last few roster spots
Core ST player on a single unit doesn't make him a lock. He may very well make the team. But not a lock is my point

Re: Cut Down To 53 Predictions
Jeff Janis is quickly becoming the Jarret Bush of wide receivers.
Every year you question why he is still with the team. Then all of a sudden he becomes a good special teams player. He just has no football IQ at all. How many times did he run out of bounds, down the sidelines, and think he can come back in and make the tackle?
