Lions Leadup Thread - RJF Released Again, Spriggs off of IR - pg 4

We've got two weeks until they play the Lions at home on MNF. With a couple weeks of reps, I expect to see more out of the offense than I did last night, and MNF is a nice stage for Hundley to show it.

Hopefully MM will find a way to un-shrivel his testicles.

But what concerns me is our receivers have had trouble getting open going back to last year. Rodgers finds a way to get it done but it's hard for a newbie to thread the needle like Rodgers has to do. Maybe it's all anecdotal and I'm wrong but it sure SEEMS as if I see a lot more wide open receivers when I watch almost every other offense. Perhaps our offensive scheme just never changes much and once our opponents watch game tape defending our receivers is relatively easy.

Page 20 of the game thread if you think they aren't getting open.

Hundley was hesitating really badly yesterday. We can't see downfield most of the time on TV but I saw a few plays just myself where someone was open off a fake and he sat on the ball, either he doesn't see it or is afraid of throwing picks. I'm guessing trust is going to big a part of the bye week for the offense. They have got to get him to believe in himself. I haven't seen physical drawbacks. His head just doesn't seem to be there yet.

Taking a snap shot doesn't always tell the whole story. Of course there were some plays where Hundley missed finding an open receiver. There are some plays Rodgers doesn't find the open receiver. Every QB has plays like that. So while yes I'm sure there were some open guys that Hundley didn't see yesterday the whole question of receivers getting open, or not getting open, predates Hundley. It was brought up a lot last season. I look forward to McGinn's analysis tomorrow after he rewatches every play on the all 22 view.

Packers legendary quarterback Bart Starr and his wife Cherry announced on Monday, October 23rd that they have made their last trip to Lambeau Field and Green Bay.

"It's been a wonderful weekend. I'm emotional saying this, but it will be our last trip back," Cherry Starr said.

The announcement came during a news conference as the family donated some of Starr's memorabilia to the Packers Hall of Fame. Among the items is Starr's last Super Bowl ring.

"That ring is priceless," Cherry Starr said. "We need to ensure that this jewelry will never ever be in the wrong hands and will ever be sold. No one will ever profit off of Bart's jewelry."

Other items in the Starr donation include:

A 1962 World Championship watch, a 14-karat gold Hamilton watch given to Bart Starr, in lieu of a ring, following the Packers’ second consecutive championship title.

An NFL Players Association watch, a 10-karat gold watch made by Omega that was presented to Starr from the Better Boys Foundation in 1968.

A microfilm necklace, presented to Cherry Starr from Kodak in honor of Bart Starr Day on Oct. 18, 1970. Inside the locket are microfilm images of the 40,000 Western Union telegrams of will-wishes sent to the beloved Packers quarterback.

1977 Packers Hall of Fame Induction ring, a 10-karat gold MTM ring, presented to Starr in honor of his induction into the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame on Jan. 22, 1977.

A Nike Super Bowl I and II MVP jacket presented to Starr during the Super Bowl 50 pregame ceremony on Feb. 7, 2016, to commemorate Starr’s MVP awards from Super Bowls I and II.

Two-time Super Bowl MVP watch, a 14-karat gold watch to honor Starr as MVP in Super Bowls I and II.

The Starr family returned to Green Bay for Sunday's game against the New Orleans Saints. The Packers Hall of Fame also honored the 50th anniversary of the Packers' 1967 NFL championship team.

"We love you all. We love our fans. We love this city -- and we'll miss you so much," said Cherry Starr.

Starr, 83, is recovering from two strokes and a heart attack suffered in 2014.

Their last trip? Is Starr going into hospice or something? I know it's a challenge to get him up to GB, with his health and all, but you usually don't make a pronouncement like that unless you know he isn't going to be around for much longer.

She said it was the last trip in 2015, too. Not saying it is or it isn't, but doesn't necessarily mean he only has a couple weeks or months left.

It's probably a real challenge to get him ready to make the trip and back again. Makes perfect sense. Besides, what other special reasons are there to return to GB?

I remember long time ago when my grandma died after travel. Made a trip from WI to FL, she used to travel between WI, FL, NY to visit her various children and stay with them.

When she got really old and really delicate travel took a big toll. Whether it was air travel or too much driving. She swelled up her last trip, had to go to the hospital and after a long time never recovered.

And I've seen it with other elderly people, they get super delicate and the slightest changes in their schedule or anything that makes them really tired can have their health deteriorate so quickly and then no recovery. My wife's grandfather was 97 years old when he passed away, that last few years he was super delicate, slightest change in diet could make him dehydrated and off to the ER.

It may not mean Starr is dying, but he's become so frail, travel is no longer an option.

As far as receivers getting open....no, we rarely see Packers WRs wide open the way we routinely see opponent's WRs running without anyone within 10 yards of them. But this has been nothing new for years now. It's most likely more of a reflection on our defense than it is our offense, but who knows? The fact is, Rodgers has had to deal with this for years, so there's no reason to think Hundley will have it any differently. The great thing about having a HOF QB is that he can still put up MVP-type numbers despite the fact that his receivers get little to no separation. Hundley is going to struggle, period. Rodgers has been given very few rushing performances like the one the team had on Sunday, though granted, they never would've committed to the run the way they did had he been playing. But I still find it inconceivable that there weren't more opportunities off of play-action passes, considering how well the Pack was running the ball. It's no secret that 87 passing yards will win NO games this season. And with our defense, 17 points won't either.

Make no mistake, the Packers were very lucky to hold the Saints to 26 points. They were outmatched, and if not for a few terrible throws by Brees, they easily could've given up 40. But the Packers got the turnovers they needed to make this a winnable game. I mean, in reality, everything that needed to happen for a Hundley-led team to win DID happen, and they still came up short. I didn't go into this game expecting a win, and yet, there it was. I don't think many more wins are gonna fall into our laps the way this one did, so that's disappointing.

Well the few positive things we get out this year is. See if Hundley is tradeable. Rodgers basically gets the year off, even with the injury. Also we could end up with a top 10 pick maybe?

But even so, not throwing in the towel yet. Next game will be a make or break to me, especially with 2 weeks to prepare.

Looks to me like they were hoping for a 4-5 yard gain and a manageable fourth down.

Looks like a quiet, under the radar end to Don Barclay's time in Green Bay.

Which is sad, considering it was only 3rd and 9, not 3rd and 20. I understand there will be growing pains, and MM was trying his best to keep Hundley from losing the game, but for a guy who's been in the system for 3 years, a 9 yard pass shouldn't be asking too much.

MM will quickly learn that he's not going to be able to "hide" Hundley. For better or worse, he's going to have to trust him to run the offense and open up the passing game a bit. You can hide marginal quarterbacks if you have an elite defense and a great running game. Now, the Packers rushing attack has shown some promise recently, but the defense is still complete garbage. This is not going to change this year, and if the past is any indication, it might never change.

It's no secret that MM's coaching will now be put under the microscope, and for good reason. This is one of those rare chances we get to see what he can do without his security blanket. Sunday was his first test, and he failed. That's ok, it was his first game without AR, so we shouldn't put TOO much stock into it just yet. But he now has two weeks to prepare a game plan for his 3rd-year QB, and the stakes will be greater. 87 passing yards won't win us a game, even if we had the '85 Bears defense. I think we can all accept it if Hundley loses games. But it'll be much tougher to accept it if MM continues to.
