Alot of fans love to use the phrases "just get rid of them", "I cant wait till goes somewhere else" or things along the lines of "We cant let him leave no matter what" when it comes to impending FAs but generally the truth of it is that it comes down to cost. Both high and low. If a guy comes cheap enough or doesnt break the bank like one would expect it generally becomes a good idea to bring them back so I was curious what's the "limit" you'd go on a "per year" basis to bring some of these guys back next year and why

Just a curious thought exercise but here we go:

Cobb- An interesting one imo. Alot of people swirling around the forums like to say overpaid very quickly when it comes to him but looking around the league his contract really doesnt seem like that big of an albatross when it comes to the top slot receivers in the league. The real question is whether it's even worth it to pay for a slot receiver to begin with? I say yes.... To an extent.... If he can be retained for say around 7-8 per year I'd argue it's a damn good idea to bring him back especially considering the youth at the position is a big question. If you answered no to the previous question then it's probably a hard pass

Ha Ha- This boards new favorite whipping boy. Hes not nearly as bad as some would like to pretend. Not the elite Saftey that PFF had him rated but still, despite popular opinion, is a good but not great Saftey. "If" he can be retained on a contract slightly above what say Burnet got from Pittsburgh, which would be in the 6-8 range I say go for especially considering the mess at Saftey we're going to have if he leaves. (Probably a long shot considering the inflation that happens every FA period but hey it's the point of the exercise)

Bulaga- I think many have allready written him off as gone due to age and injuries but I'm not so sure. Yes hes getting long in the tooth and has injury concerns but other teams know those things about him too so hes not going to command a big contract. So with that in mind even with those concerns he can still play, when healthy, so unless they plan on going Tackle in the 1st round this year if they can bring back Bulaga at a price point around 5-6 a year I'd do it and not think twice. Even if they draft a Tackle early that ends up taking over the starting role I wouldn't concern myself with paying Bulaga to simply be a top flight level backup and provide much needed depth

Mathews- Yes hes done and will never be even just good again. That said "if" they could get him for a little above the vet minimum its hard to argue he couldn't even be a rotational guy should they draft a pass rusher high

Montgomery- I actually like Monty as a scat back but anything more then the minimum is a no go

Ask me again in six months, but as of now, I'd be fine bringing back all of those guys at the right price. In order of priority:

1. HHCD: I know he gets a lot of ****, but I actually think he's a very solid safety and he'll only be 26. I think he'll get better in Pettine's scheme.

2. Bulaga: His injury issues give me pause but I really don't like the idea of having to run out a **** RT to protect Aaron.

3. Matthews: At a drastically reduced price, but we are so thin at OLB and I think he's still got some life in him.

4. Cobb: I like our young receivers and so I wouldn't be surprised if he got released. But it is nice to have a veteran target in the slot. He and Rodgers have that telepathic connection that can only come with years of playing with someone and knowing what they do and when they do it. It's nice to have that security blanket. But not at the same number he is getting now.

5. Ty: Not good enough to be a WR and not durable enough to be a RB in our scheme.

^^ Pretty much this. Brice and Jones don't appear to be a long term solution even under a different coordinator, and you can't go into next year with zero starting caliber safeties. I'd work a reasonable extension with HHCD, but if his recent comments are any indication, the team may already be planning on moving on.

Clay can take a hike. It's long overdue. Unless he wants to stick around on a minimum deal and move inside (he won't), then I don't see a place for him on this team, even given how weak we are at pass rusher. Ty can go with him. He's not a WR anymore and he'll be at best your #3 back.

Bulaga and Cobb I'm pretty indifferent on. Cobb can probably still command a decent contract in free agency give his age and reputation, so I'd say he's probably gone. Would like to keep Bulaga on a reasonable 1-2 year deal, but the injuries and age are concerning.

I wouldn't be too surprised if Matthews wanted to hang around for pretty cheap. I realize that there are 31 other teams bidding and all it takes is one stupid team, but I think everyone knows what he is at this point, an average pass rusher/ILB. He might come back at $2-3 million/year.

I could see Clay going to one of the L.A. teams on a cheap deal. I certainly wouldn't offer him much. He's doing more than Perry this year (low bar)

What they did with Hayward and Hyde has no bearing on what they do with HaHa. That was TT--or, if accounts are true, Russ Ball--making those calls. I'd guess they re-sign HaHa, there's too little depth at S not to.

I'd give Cobb a 3 year deal at cheap
I'd give Haha a 4 year deal at average Safety price
I'd let Bulaga play out his contract because he has 1 year remaining I believe
I'd give Clay a 2 year minimum type deal
Let Ty hit the market, if he finds nothing; throw him a few bones.


Adding to that....

I'd give Mo another year to prove it
I'd give Jake Ryan a 2-3 year cheaper deal

Should go out and get Patrick Peterson. I would give them NOs 1st or a 2nd.

CB isn't as big of a need as OLB or S. I'd much rather go after Chandler Jones than Peterson if you're looking at Arizona.

Discounting that I'd wager he'd cost more then that clearing the cap space to trade for him at this point is very problematic as all the vets making anything much more then the minimum are vested

Clay is done yet his ego will still want big money and to stay on the Edge - he's toast
Cobb goes the way of Nelson - we offer the minimum - Cobb leaves. The injuries have piled up
We have already asked Bulaga to take a pay cut so that speaks volumes about his future. Some team will pay him. It won't be us
Ty can't stay healthy. He has this year due to MM platooning. That isn't worth much IMO. He doesn't move the needle anyway.
HHCD has already said he doesn't see himself back and this season is a year long audition. Don't let the door hit you in the Dix

Bulaga would be the only guy I would want back but some team will give him big bucks ala Sitton and Lang

The strengths of this years draft are Edge and OL and we have two first round picks. You do the math.
Take a Safety in the second round.
