Report: Packers could eye Josh McDaniels as Mike McCarthy replacement

"Two years ago, Josh McDaniels was in the (San Francisco 49ers') coaching search until the very end," Breer said. "And one of the things the Niners were looking at was pairing different people together. When Josh McDaniels was in the running for that Niners job ... the guy who at the time had emerged as the front-runner for the general manager job ... and who had blown the Niners away was a Packers personnel man named Brian Gutekunst, who now is the (Packers') general manager. So, they've done their homework on each other."

Not the guy I'd want.

As long as he's kept away from personnel moves, I think it could work.

I get that the Pats offense is a machine far greater than just the mind of Josh McDaniels, but how could you not like this? Please god, yes.

Sure I'd be down with the hire. My only concern is if BB stays around for a few years and all of the sudden it nears the end of McDaniels deal that he'll bolt for that job. Good coach but not exactly a trustworthy guy.

Interesting. Not sure if he's my first choice, but he has a good offensive mind.

Plus if he's good this time around as head coach it'd be cool to steal him away from the Patriots as Emperor Belichick's heir apparent.

No thanks. Go after someone who isn't just the hot "name" candidate and who doesn't flake out on verbal commitments.

Denver fans HATE McDaniels with a passion. I assume a lot of that has to do with his personnel moves though. Also, has any Belichick disciple ever had success?

I think a lot of the Denver thing was he made some enemies with the fans real quick by getting rid of Cutler... which looking back on was the right move.

I kind of like hiring guys on their second head coaching stint; I think it humbles them a little and if they are good they learn from the experience.

Not a fan of him but he is interesting. GB should be a highly sought after destination. Hopefully it works out for the Packers like it did for the Bucks last year.

I'd take him. But he's on a list with Lincoln Riley, John DeFilippo, and Matt LaFleur as guys I'd consider.

He's not bolting for the NE job unless Brady is still there. And even if he is, I don't know if he'd take Brady over Rodgers.

Packers would have their choice of candidates. I think if the Packers wanted Riley they could have him.

I'd be ok with McDaniels but you'd think there would be quality candidates lining up around the block for the organization to choose from if/when the coaching job opens up. You get to walk into a situation with Aaron Rodgers and you don't have to deal with any crazy Jerry Jones style owner looking over your shoulder. That's basically the dream.

Truth of the matter is, whoever we hire has to convince Aaron to work within his system. We could hire the best offensive mind in the sport and if Aaron is hell bent on doing things his way it won't work.

I think those issues evaporate with a new coach and a new system in place.

Aaron is going to be 35-going-on-36 next year with all-but-one year in his entire career being played in one system. He's basically spent most of his career - since his MVP season in 2011 - running the scheme his way; and he seems to enjoy freelancing however and whenever he can.

It's hard to teach and old dog new tricks; it's even harder to teach an MVP who has played in one system for pretty much his entire career to tone it down and run the plays being given to him. That will require him developing trust in his HC and the system being presented to him. That will require trust in his teammates to run the plays as written.

There are examples of vet QBs going into new systems/situations like Favre. Just show him the playbook and tell him the philosophy of the offense and he'll be fine with it. Rodgers sees what other teams are doing and has routinely criticized the playcalling. This will reinvigorate him.
