Interesting re: Edwards. I'd think maybe third rounder for him.

Don't blame Edwards for leaving...other than maybe getting a brand new unit together and on the same page next year, the line is going to lose almost nothing from this. They're that deep.

If Hornibrook is really done (I have seen 50/50 around twitter and other boards), the way Coan played in the bowl game...I am upping the chances of Mertz starting. I do think they may really get into the grad transfer game as well with Horni's status up in the air, which I did not believe before.

Yeah, really hope Mertz can deliver and obviously early with our QB situation. Has so much hype but really believes in the program, so you'd hate to see him be a 'bust'

Coan had a pass td, rush td, and another pass td wrongfully disallowed in the bowl game. The INT was also questionably called in bounds, after a Houdini-esque escape from Coan. Also should have drawn a lengthy PI on a long ball. He was decent in the bowl game, and in his debut season when you factor in competition + typical Wisconsin standard. Jury is still very much out on him, beyond he's not terrible and he's not great, as of now.

I think Wisconsin isn't in bad shape at QB between him and Mertz looking the part albeit being totally unproven as a collegiate. They should let them battle it out in camp instead of stunt their progression and possibly lose Coan by bringing in a stopgap. The team isn't, on paper, in position to compete for the national playoff, even with a good qb.

You never know about Wolf or Van Den Boom either, until they get a shot. Wolf may be the next Drew Brees for all we know, or the Major Applewhite to Chris Simms (Mertz). Quick (albeit low) release, mobile, very efficient in high school. Wasn't ever going to get much of a shot as a true frosh with Hornibrook the presumptive #1 after that fluky game v. Miami last yr.

I don't have a low projection of Coan as some did after he struggled early in his tenure, but his passing success was basically one nice throw to Pryor in a giant window, 3 screen passes, and other short/wide open passes. He has majorly struggled with going through progressions. As much as everyone rides Hornibrook for questionable awareness at times, when he gets time, he's not mobile, but the ball is generally delivered to a receiver that is somewhat correctly found through progressions. On most 3rd downs, though Horni sucked this year, usually he stands back there and fires it to the right guy. Coan completed 1 pass that was not the "obvious" guy in the bowl game. On 3rd and 12 if his first read isn't open he's probably taking a sack.

I realize that the bar is low for what we need from a QB but I think it is telling that they still don't really let Coan throw because he had a lot of terrible reads this year. Yes, he can run a bit, and that will help if he's the guy. It's a nice dimension to let him pick up a wide open TD or 15 yard run out the backdoor, but he's not Lamar Jackson.

Mickey is basically stalking Mertz at this point.

The “All-American Bowl” (fka Army All-American Game) is Noon on NBC. Graham Mertz (as heavily detailed above) and Logan Brown are both playing.
