The Packers need to draft a QB in round 1 this year

Warning: Troll Post incoming from a Brett Favre nut hugger :kissmybutt:

The Packers should draft a QB in round 1 this year.

In 2005, when Aaron Rodgers was drafted, Brett was 35. Aaron's current age - 35.

Imagine how pissed off Rodgers would be if the Packers drafted a QB in the first this year.

I have always hated the people who were mad at Favre for waffling on retiring every summer or for playing for the Vikings. Favre was the old wife and the Packers wanted to play with their hot young side piece. There is no way you could blame Favre for acting the way he did, the Packers were trying to push Favre out the door. In the end, the Packers had to trade Favre away.

Rodgers would be fine with it. He's always been twice the mentor Favre was in the QB room.

lol.

They absolutely weren't "trying to push him out the door." Favre was flirting with retirement for at least a couple of years before the 2005 Draft. What were they supposed to do, just not have any sort of capable backup and/or possible replacement for when he did actually retire?

I love Favre too, he's the whole reason why I'm a Packer fan. And I totally get why he was pissed when they picked Rodgers. I just think it's a slightly different angle this time around considering Rodgers has said emphatically on a number of occasions that he hopes to play at least until he's 40. Favre never gave the Packers that sort of long-term commitment when he was 35.

Now, can the Packers and should the Packers get a better backup for Rodgers? Absolutely, especially considering his injury history in comparison to Favre's. I just think they're two separate cases where the only thing that's similar between them is the age of both Favre and Rodgers when this discussion is happening.

I don't know if this is the year or next, but the Pack needs to have more in the cupboard than Kizer and Boyle. Probably the bigger injury concern with Rogers are the three concussions. He may choose to wrap up his career sooner than planned as a by-product. I don't know if Lock, Jones, or ??? are the best candidates, but it does need serious consideration sooner rather than later.

One thing to keep in mind when the Packers took Rodgers is they were allowed to sign him to a five year deal. First rounders now only get four.

A Rod has three years left, 11.5m cap hit after 2021 season

and you need more than just one year on a rookie QB contract

I'm not sure this is the year, but I'm absolutely for it if they feel the right player is there or they feel Rodgers is truly in decline, will need a replacement after this contract, etc. Tailor someone.

Unlike some people, I don't place one player above the franchise, which is why it was so easy to move on from Favre when he held us hostage for four years in a row :D

(I am taking a shot here in response to the troll post from Nowak...but honestly, where's the lie?)

OP is a loon

Also, I would be fine if the right QB fell to 30

If someone on the Packers could dial in Lock's consistency, I'd feel confident that we'd have a third pro-bowl QB in a row. He's got an excellent arm, but he makes weird decisions sometimes and can look lackadaisical on throws when he throws at a receivers feet on a simple crossing pattern.

No.

Every time someone says we should take a WR or QB in the First Round I ask them to answer these very simple questions. I have yet to get a response. Too busy xboxing I guess.

Who is starting at Safety with Amos this year ?
Who is the starting RT in 2020 ?
Who are the starting DE's in 2020 ?
Who is the starting TE in 2020 ?
Who is playing ILB this season ?
Who is the 3rd ER in 2020 ?

A number of those issues can be solved with the 2020 NFL draft and free agency.

To be sure, the Packers can't fill all of the holes this year; but obviously, some need to be addressed via the upcoming draft - even if some of the incoming players aren't so productive this year. I know I've gone all over the map on who they pick, but after Free Agency has apparently filled some gaps, I think they NEED a Safety, Tight End, and an IL in the early rounds. If they pick Hockenson at #12, that also helps with the blocking - as long as his performances matches all reports. Having said that, I can live with an Offensive Lineman at #12, if that's the remaining BPA. QB needs to be addressed by next year - if Rogers goes down, the parties over. If he's healthy - a big IF at this point in his career, then the backup QB is moot. They need another back too, but when?

I don't think TE is a need at all for this season, considering they're returning three guys. If we're going need, I'd say

1 - ILB
2 - Safety
3 - Slot WR

and those are the pressing needs. After that you could go depth across both lines and possibly another pass rusher. The only way I think you deviate from the real needs is if you think a superstar falls at a position where you'll need an impact player next season (DL and TE make the most sense here). Think Oliver, Simmons or Hockenson, depending on what you think of them.

There's also the 5th year option that FRP have attached to their contracts.

Advocating drafting for need doesn't make your argument any stronger. At the end of the day, you have one argument you have to ask yourself. Is Player X a franchise QB? If the answer is yes, then you seriously consider drafting that player. Quarterback is the most valuable position in ALL of professional sports, and you don't pass on one simply because you have Aaron Rodgers. Aaron Rodgers is our starting QB most likely for the rest of this contract, but he's 35 and he's struggled to stay healthy for the last two seasons. That might just be a fluke injury, but they're a concern. If the answer to that question is no, then you don't take one plain and simple. It's about your evaluation of the QBs. Personally, I don't see Drew Lock as a franchise QB. I think he's a Ryan Tannehill-level of QB. One whose going to give you glimpses of something good, but always leaving you wanting more.

I couldn't disagree more. OP is right on target. No way is Rodgers better than Favre - so far.
Favre had no receivers, and a coach/GM that literally was high school coach level. Rodgers had a GM that drafted receivers in the top of the draft year after year.
Favre threw the ball into traffic, trusting his guys to make plays. Rodgers throws the ball out of bounds, or mysteriously in the ground, clearly concerned about his interception totals.
I hope Rodgers grows some balls this year, puts in the work, and goes back to putting the ball in where he can. He's certainly capable of it.

I don't think that's all that accurate.

Favre Years:
Robert Brooks: 3rd (Wolf)
Antonio Freeman: 3rd (Wolf)
Derrick Mayes: 2nd (Wolf)
Robert Ferguson: 2nd (Wolf)
Javon Walker: 1st (Sherman)
Terrence Murphy: 2nd (Thompson)
Greg Jennings: 2nd (Thompson)
James Jones: 3rd (Thompson)

Rodgers years:
Jordy Nelson: 2nd (Thompson)
Randall Cobb: 2nd (Thompson)
Davante Adams: 2nd (Thompson)
Ty Montgomery: 3rd (Thompson)

Nor would I consider Wolf "high school level".

The 2020 draft might make sense. Especially if Rodgers/LaFleur don't light the league on fire this year.
