2019 Packers Regular Season Thread - Dillon Elected to the HOF

Post#1 » by humanrefutation » Tue Sep 3, 2019 9:49 pm

It's no longer the offseason. Week 1 in is two days. Need a new clean thread to start it off.

https://www.acmepackingcompany.com/2019/9/3/20848171/packers-te-jace-sternberger-goes-on-injured-reserve-wr-allen-lazard-called-up-to-53

However, the Packers now have another player headed to injured reserve. That player is tight end Jace Sternberger, the team’s third-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. His move to injured reserve appeared on the NFL’s transaction wire on Tuesday.

Sternberger missed most of the preseason with a concussion, which resulted from a hit by Texans cornerback Lonnie Johnson during joint practices in early August. However, he returned in time for the preseason finale against the Kansas City Chiefs, when he suffered a knee injury. Sternberger scored a touchdown in the first half, but went down awkwardly late in the second quarter and went to the locker room on a cart. He did return to the sideline after halftime, but did not go back in the game.

Now that he is on injured reserve, he could return later this season. Players on IR may return to the active roster after a minimum of eight weeks, meaning that Sternberger can be eligible to return before the Packers’ week 9 game against the Los Angeles Chargers.

To take Sternberger’s place on the active roster, the Packers have chosen to call up wide receiver Allen Lazard from the practice squad, according to The Athletic’s Matt Schneidman. Lazard was one of the team’s last cuts on Saturday, and he went unclaimed through waivers before signing to the squad on Sunday afternoon. As a 6-foot-5, 227-pound player, Lazard offers excellent size and may be able to run some similar routes to what the team had planned for the 6-foot-4, 251-pound Sternberger, particularly as a big slot receiver. Lazard also offers special teams ability as a gunner on kick and punt coverage.

I like Lazard, so I'm glad he was retained and now has been called up.

Having said that, the Pack has a lot riding on two comparatively old and fading TE's (Graham/Lewis); and Tonyan, the strong on potential-limited performance history, and now Lazard, who's more of a wide out. :o

IIRC, non of those guys are particularly good blockers.

Lewis is a great blocker. That's pretty much why he's still in the league.

I think they have high hopes for Tonyan.

I think you're right about their hopes for Tonyan, but Lewis has to be #4 on the depth chart, even after the Sternberger/Lazard swap. To me, it still points out the talent problem of the last few years of TT. It's taken some big FA spending and some recent draft success to shore up the defense, but there are weak spots that couldn't be filled this year.

*edit* I hope I'm wrong about Graham. I have no confidence that he's going to provide much help.

Wilde is now trying to frame the badgering of Rodgers and MLF on the audible thing as a football question and not trying to stir the pot. I've seen enough PP posts to know when people are trying to find drama and create conspiracies.

Packers trade 14th pick in 2018 for 27th pick in 2018 and 2019 1st.

Packers trade 27th pick, 76th pick and 186th pick for 18th pick (Jaire Alexander) and 248th pick.

Packers trade 30th pick, 114th pick and 118th pick for 21st pick (Darnell Savage).

Nicely done Gute.

How many holes do you guys expect to fill in one off season? The upgrade at OLB and Safety is gigantic, that and adding a starting OL is about as much of a homerun as you can ask for in FA.

Are there varying issues at ILB, WR and TE, yes, but they prioritized the other positions listed above and I strongly agree with them on that. Every NFL team has weak spots and you can't fix all of them at the drop of a hat. Sometimes you have to count on young players stepping up when you invest a lot in other areas. Burks/EQ/Sternberger get hurt, MVS and Tonyan haven't shown the progression they wanted(yet, still early), they thought they could squeeze another year out of Graham.

Just shows you fanatics will always find something to complain about. We spent a **** ton in free agency and we have people complaining we're not aggressive enough like the eagles are. What?

Yeah I'm not sure what people expected or hoped for. They added 5 starters in one offseason and are 3-1 in a stretch where 3 out of the 4 were playoff caliber opponents, 2 of which were division games, while incorporating a new offensive scheme.

The fact people can complain about that really is mind boggeling. It's almost as if it's a self fulling prophecy and it was just a matter of people waiting for them to lose, (no matter who it was to), in order for them to have an excuse act like everything is horrible

Is nothing less then 4-0 really unacceptable?

^^^^You guys need to slow the roll. Both my post and FAH's noted that we were happy with the offseason. And thrilled team is 3-1.

Simply noting that the ILB and WR situation suck, and have for some time. Martinez specifically sucks also. 8-)

I still will never be a fan of investing high draft picks or big money in ILB, so by nature I won't ever criticize the lack of attention to that position. Martinez is fine, he's just never gonna be a difference-maker. I think you can certainly say that while focusing on the defense though, the WR and TE positions have been neglected. Too much faith was put into an aging Jimmy Graham and MVS taking a massive leap to a solid WR #2 (which I still have faith in, just not that quickly). If there's one thing I think Gute should have done differently, it would have been to aggressively shop Graham before he was due that roster bonus, and while he still had the "he was just misused in McCarthy's offense" excuse.

At this point I'm not really a big fan of trading assets to bring in a guy like Sanders just to have a veteran on hand. If there's anybody that you can trade for and bring in an immediate talent upgrade at this position though?........Go get Julio Jones.

I can't imagine anyone would have traded for Graham this offseason.

This. The excuses coming out in favor of Martinez are equally awful. The defensive line, especially with Montravious Adams in has been very good. Martinez is very bad when there is a blocker nearby to him. He forgets about gap responsibility, and he does not play downhill. He has always been meh in zone coverage and too slow to cover a back in man to man. This team could really use a healthy Curtis Bolton right now.

I'm still interested in AJ Green. He's hurt, and he's a UFA after this season. Still, he could help us for a stretch run and he'd probably be cheap.

I will say that I am more disappointed in WR and TE because adding just one potential playmaker at either position would seem to make a difference right now.

But with the defense I am with Ron regarding ILB, I’ll take massive upgrades at OLB and safety at the expense of ILB. Can you imagine not having both or even one of the Smith’s in favor of an(any) ILB? No thanks.

Long story longer, I’m not saying it wouldn’t be nice to upgrade WR/TE/ILB, I’m saying if you don’t have infinite resources, I’d prefer the upgrade at OLB/S/OL

Can Gary play ILB? Use his athletic ability to go run after guys, right?

Just go out and get a "Howard Green" type acquisition. Just need a big body you can plug in on run downs and eat up blockers. Lancaster ain't cutting it, and we don't really have anybody else that fills that kind of role if Adams just can't stay healthy.

I haven't watched as much NFL as would like to recently. Question, I see the defenses frequently running into the endzone for photo ops after big plays, it looks a little clownish.. has this been a thing or is something new?

I think they can do whatever they want as long as they don't break any rules. It looks to me like they enjoy playing with each other and we might actually have a really good locker room. Seems like a good thing to me.
