Cardinals Lead Up

Sunday Noon.
Cardinals got an improbable win at SF that gives them some good momentum. They didn't play very well but still won.
Kyler + Harrison Jr scare the hell out of me.
Have to take care of business at home.

Our front four has to get pressure. They've been a huge disappointment this year. That performance against the Rams was embarrassing.

Wyatt has been a beast and he was out against the Rams, but you aren't wrong. Gary in particular needs to step the **** up.

I've long been a Gary defender, but I read somewhere that his pass rush win rate was currently at 3% (not counting yesterday) as opposed to 16% and 17% the previous two years. That's.....atrocious. Don't know what's been up with him and Kenny, but those dudes need to get their **** together. Especially so if Van Ness keeps trending towards being a "meh" guy.

It's usually a lazy argument, but the "got paid and quit" storyline for Gary is becoming more and more evident. He's nowhere near the same guy he was after he was extended. I know obviously he had the ACL injury, but even when he was initially back last year, he was disruptive and getting sacks/pressures on a routine basis. Since he got paid, he's been pretty invisible out there. The lack of pressures from him has been the biggest worry. It's like it is a completely different guy out there.
At least Clark was actually getting some push and was noticeable out there yesterday. Gary has been completely invisible for more than half a season now, going back to the last couple of months last season.
Going back to this game, Jaire needs to suit up. Otherwise I fear what Kyler/MHJ are going to do with the defense if our front continues to get zero pressure.

Clark was in the backfield constantly yesterday causing havoc. Problem is most of the time nobody else was there.

Yeah a lot of what Clark does is occupy blockers so other guys can make plays, it doesn't show up in the box score.

Clark may be getting double teamed, but there wasn't consistent pressure on Stafford in spite of that. By most of the accounts I heard, the Rams OLine is subpar, so there was problems with the pass rush. I did see Quay blitz a couple of times, and if I recall, the back picked him off each time. As others have commented, Gary hasn't shown anything so far. Preston had two decent behind the line plays that I saw, and Cooper got the one sack
How much of this meh line play is due to struggles to un-learn Joe Barry line technique, how much is not ciphering out Haefele technique, and how much is lack of skill?

Do they need to let Gary start rushing from a 2 point stance?

I was wondering if the 4-3 switch is causing hiccups for the entire line

This is more likely imo. If it was one or two players playing poorly its one thing, but it seems to be the whole defensive line. To me that screams they're having problems with the new scheme.
Side note didn't Gary say he was adding weight this offseason in anticipation of being a down linemen in the new scheme, part of me wonders if playing heavier is effecting him. You see that sometimes with RBs and WRs they add weight but lose a step.

With Kyler being such a run threat I feel like the defense will employ the same strategy they used the first two games to limit his mobility. Which considering the pass rush is rarely getting pressure off the edge anyways it might work better for Gary/Smith playing contain, historically that's been one of their strengths.

I don't buy the scheme switch being the culprit when Gary's last legit sack happened during Thanksgiving of last year. The game was really the last time he has done anything noteworthy

I felt like he was most effective playing out extra wide, curious if that was true and if so, playing closer to the inside could absolutely impact him. But no data to back any of that up, just a feeling

Great to see Watson back. When I saw high ankle sprain I assumed he'd be out until after the bye.

I saw a bunch of reports saying Wyatt was the only one not practicing.
Either way, it's silly to write off his season in Week 6. Good chance we'll get hit with an O-line injury and need him out there at some point.
