Alright, sake of argument here.

In 2006 the Packers are coming off their worst season in years. Favre retires, they hold the draft, pick up Hawk, Jennings, Colledge, etc. and it's now Rodgers' team.

Predictably, Rodgers sucks. The Packers are one of the very worst teams in the league, winning 3 games.

Now, it's the 2007 offseason. Instead of sitting at #16, they're now at #2 and staring Calvin Johnson right in the face.

Where should Thompson go with his pick?

He could take the best WR prospect, well, ever.
He could grab a franchise left tackle.
He could take the elite runningback prospect to take over for Ahman Green, who's career ended after seeing 8 in the box every play in '06.
Or maybe he could even trade down.

Lets say they go WR and get Rodgers his target for the next ten years in Calvin Johnson. In round two, with some real talent sitting there, they can go with either of the top guards in the draft in Blalock or Sears. Or they could add another defensive impact player in Posluzny. The draft's 2nd rated TE, Zach Miller, is there as well. SS Eric Weddle could be had too.

Manuel sucks, so what the hell, lets go with Weddle.
Unless Tampa or Oakland takes Brandon Jackson, he's sitting there for GB in the 3rd.

Now, because the Packers were so god-awful in '06, they've got a cupcake schedule in '07. By finishing with their record in the North, they play what basically amounts to the schedule Detroit would have had.

@ Oakland
@ Washington
Tampa (we get Carolina instead)
Denver (we go to Denver)
@ Arizona (we go to St. Louis instead)
NY Giants (we go to NY)
Kansas City (we go to KC)

So they head into year two of the Rodgers era armed with a Calvin Johnson, a replacement for Manuel in Weddle and their new RB in Brandon Jackson.

How's the 2007 with this team look compared to the 2007 we're staring at now?

I like your Favre retires team better. But I'm a "tanker" so I have no problem with sucking for 2 years to help us get the play-makers that will help us win down the road.

If that's what Thompson really wanted to happen,he has nobody to blame except himself that it didn't.He's the GM and gets paid to make tough descisions that he believes are best for the organization,even if they might be unpopular.

Well,if Thompson really wanted Rodgers to be playing last year and this year,then he should have shown some backbone and made it happen instead of asking Brett to come back.

You have to take Johnson at 2. It gives Rodgers a chance to throw to the best WR prospect ever so hes got no excuses their. You then get either a S in round 2 or a OG. I still dont know if I buy into the Rodgers hype though. That NE game was god awful

I'm curious to see some opinions on this because it essentially gets to the heart of why the Packers need to move on from Brett.

In the above scenario, which would have been very realistic had Brett decided not to come back, you had positives that in my opinion outweigh the negatives. We land a star in Calvin Johnson, and Thompson has an idea as to whether or not Rodgers can be the guy. The negative? We don't watch Favre break every record out there.

you are just not this stupid are you??? Favre was far more aweful and put this team in no position to win that game. You don't even have Rodgers as the primary QB for the week...he has no game plan, no starter reps...to base your judgement on that is pure stupidity. There is absolutely no evidence to judge Rodgers at this time.

But my answer is predictable you know.

I agree with Dude. TT has the power if he had the balls to do what Jerry Jones did when he took over Dallas and made the vehemently fan opposed unpopular move by **** canning the hugely popular saint like adored Coach Tom Landry.

I have consistently held two congruent opinions
1 - I prefer building as TT has but also giving Farve a few wise inexpensive weapons to win now (playoffs are OK even if not Superbowl)
2 - Failing to do that - have the balls to move Brett and realize your DB scenario above.

TT didn't and still doesn't - so your post is irrelevant.

Favre can't be so stupid as to see that this team has been and is rebuilding, his last real opportunity vanished on 4th and 26, plus his insanely ill-advised heave that was intercepted and basically sealed the loss. I will assume Favre is intelligent enough to see the rebuilding process so he clearly has one of 3 options, 1) ask for a trade because he still believes he can win a championship 2) Stay in GB, shut the hell up and be the leader for these young kids you are supposed to be 3)retire. Its so damn simple its frightening.
