Wilbon not a big fan of NFL management I guess. :)

Packers management is "gutless."

Wow. You'd think Patrick and Wilbon were simply reading conversations around here.

Wilbon is pissed at the NFL and their management. He doesn't like that McCarthy and the NFL in general believes that players are beholded to the league 365 days a year and come to 'mandatory minicamps'. Thinks Favre should have told McCarthy to go to hell. He doesn't like that Thompson is waiting on Favre and that if Thompson is being paid to play GM, he should act like one.

Patrick says it's on Brett because Thompson can't make that call. He also says Favre should have read the writing on the wall.

Disagree with Patrick, in that Favre probably thought that rebuilding and winning weren't mutually exclusive (by experiencing our success last season). Building on a promising season by adding Moss - he probably thought we'd be this year's Saints or Ravens.

Then with no Moss, he probably feels like he got jerked around, and is now in a weird position.

I simply can't envision Favre being so dense as to not see that the Packers weren't as good as their record. We beat 7 nobodies and a team that mailed in their final game. We're not adding a new starting QB to take over for a lousy one either.

I'm guessing Favre saw a defense showing quite a bit of promise and a division with only one team that finished above .500.The Bears to some hits to their team and with a shaky QB they are hardly a lock to match last seasons success.

Add a weapon or two to our offense and the Oline builds on last year along with the defense maybe becoming a top unit in the NFC,winning the division isn't a crazy thought to him or me either.

Man are the Bears underrated on here.

Just to be clear what I mean. They led the NFC in both points scored and fewest points allowed. They finished with the best record at 13-3 (2nd best in the NFL) with the second best team being only 10-6; had they had a reason, they could have beaten the Packers the last week and finished 14-2. Their only loss to an NFC team was that loss to the Packers.

They got to the SB with the best DT in football not playing. They also didn't have their Pro Bowl safety in Brown.

The Bears annihilated the competition in the NFC last year. I don't see enough negatives in their offseason to make me think they suddenly fall off a **** cliff. They actually upgraded their backfield if you want to make the argument about losing Jones.

The defense that gave up...

26 points to the Bears and made Grossman look like an All-Pro?
34 to the Saints
24 to the Lions
31 to the Eagles
24 to the Phins
24 to the Bills
35 to the Pats
34 to the 'Hawks
38 to the Jets?

Look at the teams they showed 'promise' too. The 49ers, the Lions, the 'Queens and the Bears (on that game when their own QB admitted he wasn't all there for)

I think the defense with be pretty damn good this year if our older corners hold up and they find a saftey to not be flat out brutal. All the countless mental breakdowns in the secondary that lead to big gains should be able to be corrected or they should fire the defensive coaching staff.

With KGB no longer starting, teams shouldn't be able to always run wild going to that side. The defensive line should be a big strength as the linebackers, our two corners are a top 10 tandem.Collins is a big key,he must make a leap from a teasing great talent to a consistant force.Obviously a saftey next to Collins must replace Manuel and at least be solid. The talent looks there to be a very impressive unit.

By the way,if the defense isn't good,i'll have a hard time holding out hope that Thompson is doing a good job. He's invested enough into the defense that if it doesn't perform,Ted has some explaining to do.

You can't have it both ways DB.You imply the defense isn't very good even with all Thompson has invested in it,then say Ted is doing a great job.

Fair enough. But I'll say that the primary reason I believe he's doing well is he's accumulated a lot of youth and many look like players. I'm not expecting a fast turnaround on a team that was on an obvious downslope. I didn't think they'd be outstanding last year, relying on so much youth and inexperience. It's my hope that in two years when they're all vets that they come together to form a dominant unit.

What?

The defense isn't a bunch of rookies. The Dline next year outside of Harrell shouldn't have any rookies that play alot, the linebacking core has Barnett and a top 5 pick that shouldn't need a long time, and Woodson/Harris are vets along with Collins being in his 3rd year.

If you want to give that unit another 2 years, you sure have low expectations. If Thompson evaluated the talent on defense correct and McCarthy hired the right staff, that unit should be good this year.

Personally, I don't think anyone here is in a position to say that they know for a fact that we couldn't be competitive, make the playoffs, and possibly do well in the playoffs if we had Randy Moss...

Now, I personally think that Brett was thinking this, and I think that he feels that with the right QB Randy is going to be the randy of old....and Randy Moss from 2002 would bolster this teams offense in a huge way, and I think that is what saddend Brett the most.

Then Favre is a complete idiot if he thinks like you...a broken down, lazy, quitter does not a contending team make.

I don't have high expectations for them by any means because of what I saw last season, but I don't think they'll be bad either. My guess is this season they're going to be a top 12 defense. I don't have any faith in the SS or SLB position. I like Jenkins but I want to see him prove it over the course of a full season. I also don't think Woodson and Harris will be as good as they were last year due to age.

I think we may be couple pieces away.

My hope is that Hodge or Bishop have a good enough off-season that they manage to move Barnett to the outside. Pops was a DE in college and he looked great as an edge rusher last season. He could fill the KGB role I believe. I also hope that they found their future SS in Rouse because Manuel completely blows. If Jenkins plays as well this season as he did in the final month they have both DEs set for a while. Blackmon is key. That guy has to come in and play well as the nickelback and challenge for a starting spot next year.

I think a defense is only as good as its weakest link. I don't know how weak we are at SS, SLB, right DE and nickelback...I just think there are question marks.

I hope you're wrong for the teams sake and Thompson's sake.Given the money and draft choices spent on the defense, plus it not being really unexperienced, the unit should be good if Thompson evaluated talent correctly and the right coaches are in place.

Guys like Hawk and Collins need to make a leap this year.Collins will be in his third season,it's time he stops being an athletic tease who looks fabulous at times and wandering around lost other times while giving up back breaking big plays.Hawk was very solid as a rookie last year and i like the pick, but he was a top 5 choice, not a 3rd rounder. If he has greatness in him he should show it this season, top linebackers typically don't need a long learning curve.

The defensive line has alot of money invested in it and a first round pick this year,it's not a young group either full of inexperience. If it doesn't perform really well,it's on Thompson.

I agree saftey is still a big concern. As i mentioned above,Collins has only been a tease so far, whether he finally can be consistant and not just a great athlete will play a huge role.Thompson wiffed big time on Manuel, one of Underwood/Culver/Rouse has to be at least decent. That position was a killer to the defense last year, may as well have just put a statue at SS.

I'm with you on Blackmon,Thompson has largely passed on CB in his drafts and our starters aren't young. If either Woodson or Harris got hurt,it could be ugly if Blackmon doesn't show he can play. Poppinga i'm iffy on,he scares me in coverage, but he did improve as the year went on.Instinct wise is where i see him lacking most, but few teams have 3 top starters at linebacker.Hodge i'm not holding alot of hope for taking over at MLB so Barnett can switch,Hodge just worries me because he runs like he has ankle weights on.

I guess where we differ is you give way more slack to GM's than i do.When i look at what's been invested into the defense and that it's really not overly young,i see no reason the unit shouldn't be pretty damn good if Thompson evaluated properly and a good defensive coaching staff is in place. No reason Thompson should need 5 years to form a really good unit given the money and draft choices he's put into it.

The offense has been ignored much more,so i wouldn't expect it to yet perform at a high level.
