Final Roster: Defense

Post#1 » by LUKE23 » Thu Aug 9, 2007 1:14 pm

What does everyone think it will be? I have 26 guys:

DE: Jenkins, Kampman, KGB, Hunter, Montgomery
DT: Pickett, Harrell, Williams, Jolly, Cole
LB: Poppinga, Barnett, Hawk, Bishop, Hodge,
S: Collins, Manuel, Rouse, Bigby, Underwood
DB: Woodson, Harris, Bush, Blackmon, Dendy, Walker

Does this look accurate?

DE-totaly agree
DT-"
LB-Not sure about Bishop, rest are locks
S-I would put Culver ahead of Bigby.
DB-After the top two it's totally open. I think they will bring in people yet.

Since we carry 3 ST guys - K, P, LS Davis

we won't carry more than 25 on D - probably 24.

leaving 25 or 26 roster spots for O (including 1 KR-WR - Bodiford or Clowney).

Recognizing injuries could change things before final roster BUT with what you list
At DT - agreed - we'll carry those 5
At DE - either Hunter or Montgomery will go -we'll carry 4
At LB - add one more - maybe White - we will carry 6
At CB - one will go - Dendy or Walker -we'll carry 5
At S - one will go - hopefully Manuel - we'll carry 4

IF we carry 25 then add back either a DE or CB

I think White definitely makes it as a special teamer unless one of the young guys looks too good to pass up.

One thing i'm interested to see is if say Bishop outplays Hodge and he does well on special teams, would we be willing to cut ties with Hodge? Both are pretty much strictly middle linebackers and there isn't room i can see for both unless somehow Bishop shows he can function decently at OLB.

Since Hodge was a third round choice i'd assume he'd be given more benefit of the doubt over Bishop, but if Hodge doesn't improve on special teams he's pretty much a wasted roster spot if Barnett stays healthy.

I wondered the same thing until seeing Barnett being primary backup at both OLB spots sliding from starting MLB to Starting OLB if one got hurt or Popp sucks. With one more OLB - say White, Simpson or Johnson - THEN both Hodge & Bishop could stay as MLB for 6 total.

No we are not going to cut ties with Hodge. That is a prize pick and only big hitter on the team. He had a bad 1st game against the Seahawks and people want to waste him. In that game AJ had a worse game by the way. Everyone focused on him because he was the change and the SHawks raked up big yards on the ground. He is going to be a real solid and eventual starter.

I think Hodge and Bishop both make the team, and we stick with 5 LB's.

Regarding the corners, I think Dendy did not do himself any favors in the preseason game, and he just bumped himself to #5 DB. I'd rank the DB's right now as:

Starters: Woodson/Harris
Nickel: Bush
#4: Blackmon
#5: Dendy
Cut: Walker

Bigby was abysmal, and I think he got himself cut. At safety I see

Starters: Manuel (YUCK)/Collins
#3: Rouse
#4: Underwood

If they keep 5, Bigby.
