If you don't have a comment on the man cave topic go straight to topic 2 WHat do you collect? Just about everyone collects something.

The current theme is movies- I have had a assortment of original vintage one sheet posters and lobby cards -from Hitchcock (Rear Window) to James Bond (Gold Finger). It's been pretty cool, but getting old and with the football season just about to start I am thinking of a change. I have asked others for their opinion, but now that I am probably going in the sports theme direction I thought I would get your opinion.

Choices:

1.) A strictly vintage old school football theme.

2.) All sports theme -vintage old school

3.) Unusual Sports stuff- I got the idea to collect what you may call "oddities" a few years back. It started with USFL stuff and then went into XFL, defunct teams leagues -infamous players , etc. This is what I would call the "conversation piece theme"

4.) All football-vintage to modern day. Jim Thorpe to Reggie Bush

The room is modern black/white look (not sure the right term)-black leather couches/recliner -glass coofee/end tables, plasma TV, video games/DVD, etc-The reason I am leaning towards the "vintage" stuff is it is a departure/contrast from the 21st century feel of the room which is kind of "blingy"-do I really want modern day (bling) players? Although I do have a lot of cool stuff from the last 5-10 years of star players.


If you have a suggestion for something else let me know -doesn't have to be sports?

Basketball- Mostly old schooll HOF'ers -autos
1940 and earlier Pulps/pre 1970's Comics


Here's a shot of some of my better cards that I am going to have framed - One of the things I am going to do is combine an old Bears/Packer program with Bear/Packer vintage player cards and autos. This picture has one fo my favorite cards in my collection that will go with this- Dick Butkus - 3 color Pro Bowl worn jersey auto (#'d 10/25).

There's a great spot in our kitchen where it would be perfect for a 42" flat screen so I could watch sportscenter while eating breakfast......but we've got a mural of some flowers and birds on the wall there....

Thats when you throw a football around in the house with some friends. Throw a bad pass or pay a friend to throw a bad pass at that picture on the wall.

I was close to being married 3 times (thank god I waited for the right one)and am pulling the trigger this Spring. She loves sports, shows interest in my silly hobbies, and is not too shabby in the looks department. I don't have a TV in the kitchen, but since she does 95% of the cooking and could watch the Brewers at the same time-she would probably love a flat screen. Guess I got lucky.


My advice to the young (college age guys) take your time and play the field A LOT. Too many of my friends locked on early and are paying the price now. Use your head-the one on your shoulders that is.

I am married and I have 2 rooms in my basement displaying my sports collection.

I jump all over the place on what I collect.

Right now I am in the jersey click since I just picked up a Signed Sandberg Jersey. Having proper cases to display the product to me is some of the biggest expense, but very important.

I part own and manage a grocery store in GB, so I get a ton of signed packer items for free all the time. I have Favres auto on just about everything.

To me though, I like the random stripes of different sports, but it needs to flow.

For instance, if you're going to pepper your walls try to mix in a jersey with some 16x20's, 11x14's ect. I have all different sports all on the same wall.

My main wall pieces has a Football jersey, basketball Jersey, 6 bats, 4 16x20's with several smaller pictures filling in the holes.

I have been collecting since I was a child. I have close to 50 signed baseballs, 15 basketballs, hand full of footballs, bats, jerseys, etc.

I like my photos to be memorable moments, not just portraits. I have a standing list of the ones that I still need to get. my next buy will be pudge fisks game 6 homer.

That is what I can suggest. I could never stick to one sport. Just stick to only 3 or 4 companies that you allow your products to have COA's from. I like Upper Deck, Steiner, PSA/DNA, to name a few.

Ironically (cause this is a Packers board) I collect original broadcasts of Packers games and have them on DVD.I also collect classic NFL games but its mostly Packer games.I also collect Bucks games and classic NBA games as well.

Football games are obviously much easier to collect than NBA games because you only have a 16 game season and I collect entire Packer seasons,its kind of similar to collecting sports cards and like collecting a complete set of cards I collect an entire Packer season.


What i'd like to do is eventually have every game Favre has played in and im well more than halfway there.I have the complete Packer seasons on DVD including playoffs from 1992,1993,1994,1995,1996,1997,1998,1999,2003,2004,2005,2006.Im just missing a few games from the 2000,2001,2002 seasons.

I also like to collect Packer specials and shows but those are a lot harder to find and the ones I do have are mostly ones I recorded myself although I do have a Lindy Infante show from 1989.

I have a bunch of games from the 80's as well and a few from the 70's

I don't even watch most of them except for the real classics,they're fun to collect and just kinda cool to have.Its also a very inexpensive hobby.

I obtain the games by either recording them myself or making trades with other collectors for games I don't have.

One tid bit for you guys is that the orginal broadcasts of the Ice Bowl along with Super Bowls 1 & 2 either don't exist or have yet to be found.If they did someone could transfer the old fim to DVD.

The thing is back in the 60's TV Stations would record over the film because it was so expensive in those days and the Ice Bowl and Super Bowls 1 & 2 where all recorded over evidently.

One game that was found and transefred to DVD which I have in my collection is the 1961 NFL Championship game Packers vs Giants at Lambeau Field.

And when I say orginal broadcasts Im talking about of course the game as it was seen live with halftime show,commercials ect ect not NFL films slow motion highlights..

Didn't the tape over the original copy of the first super bowl with day time soaps?

I think I remember hearing there was no copy of the game and that it was common place for networks to re-use film.

I used to have the 1995-1997 Packer seasons on VHS along with all three Badgers Rose Bowls,but i couldn't get the interest up to watch them so they went in the trash once i got my first DVD players and junked the VCR.

I kinda regret throwing those tapes out,but i'm still not sure if i'd really watch them much.

the only VHS's that I still have floating around are sports games I taped. I was huge Jordan fan, so I have a lot of his on tape....finals games, the double nickel game, 63 in the playoffs vs Boston.

The thing with card collecting today is that everyone is concerned about having "gem mint"- "pristine" conditioned cards. Special: from my video vault a how to-and a actual real time "pack break" from a a VERY high-end vintage product purchased at an exclusive estate sale. This should serve as a guide to all of you who may be thinking of getting into this hobby.
