Packers Trade For Grant

Post#1 » by MickeyDavis » Sat Sep 1, 2007 10:25 pm

The Giants have traded RB Ryan Grant, a Don Bosco grad, to the Packers for an undisclosed draft pick, according to someone familiar with the trade talks.
Grant had an excellent preseason (18 rushes for 90 yards and a touchdown), but the Giants didn't have room on the roster for him with Brandon Jacobs, Reuben Droughns, Derrick Ward and Ahmad Bradshaw all likely to be on the final roster that's scheduled to be announced at 6 p.m.

The person familiar with the trade talks, who requested anonymity because the official announcement hasn't been made yet, said the Packers tried to send one of their kickers, Mason Crosby or Dave Rayner, to the Giants in lieu of the draft pick. But the Giants said they were confident with Lawrence Tynes.

Grant will now get a chance to compete for carries in the Packers' backfield with the injured Vernand Morency and rookie Brandon Jackson. It's not a bad situation for Grant, who missed all of last season with a hand injury suffered in an accident at a night club. Grant worked hard to get back in playing shape and it showed this preseason. Green Bay obviously noticed and pulled the trigger on the trade with less than an hour before final rosters were to be announced. Grant had been told by the Giants he was going to make the team.

Hard to believe the Giants could get a pick for him but we couldn't get a pick for Rayner...

We'll be lucky to get a pick (or TE) for one of our extra DLs or CBs. Probably not. But TT is trying right now.

We were SO DESPERATE for a RB (a draft pick for this guy probably was steep considering he was going to be cut and probaby could have been picked up off waivers=Pack didn't want to take ANY chances), and Rayner isn't even the best Kicker who was let go in final cuts.

Grant by the way is a 25 year old ex-Notre Dame RB, kind of like Noah Herron. I remember him fighting injuries a lot in college. He went undrafted in 2005 eventually signing a free agent deal with the Giants. Was clearly outplayed this year by Ahmad Bradshow who the Packers could have drafted instead of Wynn.

A 6th round pick who played LB last year in college at fullback, and this guy and Deshawn Wynn, a seventh round pick at halfback for opening day.

Sounds good to me!!!

How sad is it when Morency who hasn't played virtually the entire preseason is an upgrade for you?

Hint: Very sad

I'm going to put my ass on the line right now by saying Morency is going to surprise lots of people. If (and I know it's a big if) he stays healthy I'm saying 1,000+ yards for him.

I would say Morency is our best RB, but that's not really saying much. I think BJack will be ok, just doesn't look like anything special. If they don't open up holes better it wont matter who they put at RB. The O-Line looks pretty one dimensional -decent pass blocking that can't get any push in the run game.

again, the RB position matters far less then the offensive line...if the line can't open up any holes, which they haven't, you can't run the ball at all.....as uneven as Jackson has looked with the Packers he has far outplayed the great Marshawn Lynch in the pre-season, who's number are embarrassing.
