Unreal. I've never heard of a team dropping over 20 spots after one game. I can't say I agree, at all.

Losing to a Division 1-AA school will cause that to happen. Not surprised.

Frankly, I don't give a crap about Michigan. Year in and year out the Badgers start the season with a lower ranking than they deserve. When you start that low, it is almost impossible to get back up to the top positions since you are always waiting for other teams to lose in front of you to move up. Michigan gets respect every year so let them deal with it for once.

The best 1-AA programs could compete and win regularly with the lower level 1-A programs. Of that I have no doubt.

Had Michigan gone out and lost to Memphis I doubt they drop all the way out.

Michigan should have blown them out of the water if they were so good. This is a precedent in college football. Even if App. St. was the best 1-AA program, Michigan has millions more dollars for recruiting, coaching, training, etc and were playing at home. They deserve this drop and more.

it's unfortunate that we even have preseason rankings--they're asinine, paricularly when viewed n relation to their impact upon a team's BCS standings in the mid-fall.

so I look at this as the first real rankings, b/c it's the first time you look at the team in the given year. So if you made the rankings for the first time today, and you ranked the top 25 teams in the country based on their season to date, how the hell could you put Michigan in the top 25? Just b/c they're supposed to be that good, doesn't mean they are. Notre Dame and FSU have epitomized that over the last few years. That's what sucks about preseason rankings--it's all hype and expectations, jaded by our own persuasions and stereotypes. It has nothing to do with what has transpired this year on the field.


As such, Michigan should not be in the top 25.

Has to be the biggest drop in history. I can't think of anything close in the last 20 years.

BuckPack is right though, they should do the polls after like week 3. Ranking teams ahead of time gives advantages to the teams at the top anyway, even if they haven't proven anything.

You could write a book on the injustices of college football though, so I digress.

I also agree that pre-season polls should be abolished. They end up hurting deserving teams and helping those that really aren't as good as their rankings. Notre Dame is another in recent memory I can think of.

But my point has less to do with how bad Michigan may be than how good App State and other 1-AA programs are. Over the last five to six years I've watched a lot of 1-AA and Div II football and I don't think the separation is as huge as is thought.

A Div 1-AA powerhouse, year in and year out, could carve up a lot of 1-A programs. Should they be able to go into the Big House and beat a team that's truly the fifth best in the country? No. I think App State could go into the Dome and take care of Minnesota without much of a problem. Would you drop Michigan 20 spots for losing to the Gophers? I would hope not.

Anyway, Michigan will be back in the top 25. That offense is too good to keep them out.

Your overratting A-State I'm afraid. This team gets their butts kicked when going against the big boys traditionaly-they were pounded by Kansas 8-36, LSU 0-24, even Furman beat them. They are what they are, to say they would go into Minnesota and take care of them "without much problem" is off base in my opinion. Hats off to them, but put it in persective. They beat a UM in a major upset on a day they didn't have Hart for the whole game and played poorly.

The reason there was such a big drop with UM is that it was the first game. Had this been the 8th game, you would not see as much movement. Michigan's defense sucks, their Coach is NCAA's version of Ned Yost, and Henne is pretty eratic. Hart was hurt in the game. It's one thing to lose to A-STate, but to lose at home? They deserve the drop, an embarsement to the Big 10. What this will do is minnmize the Badgers vctory in November.

Well Kirk Herbstreit's ballot had Michigan #10 and Wisconsin #11.

Kirk Herbstreit cant stand Wisconsin or anything that has to do with it. Ever since the incident with College Gameday a couple years ago, all he does is constantly bash the Badgers.

I believe when GameDay came to Madison the students were being very vulgar and chanting ES-FU during their analysis, and could be heard clearly on national television. Herby also wrote something a while back about how Badger fans need a lesson in manners or something to that effect.

In all reality, he's just mad we've absolutely OWNED his Buckeyes recently.

The last 10 years Wisconsin is 4-3 against OSU, the last 20, they are 6-10. I believe Herbstriet was 3-1 v. Wisconsin.

Anyone who thought that UM didn't deserve dropping out of the top 25-please see todays Oregon@UM highlights. As I said Henne-eratic and the defense is no good. That team is an emabarasement to the Big 10, and I'm loving it. A-State is a nice team for their division, but any half way decent D1 team would have pounded them.
