Packers 2nd Youngest Team in NFL

Post#1 » by LUKE23 » Wed Sep 5, 2007 12:37 pm

By 5 days to the Colts.

http://www.packers.com/news/releases/2007/09/04/1/

"YOUTH WILL BE SERVED
-The youngest team in the NFL in 2006, the Green Bay Packers remain among the youngest teams in pro football this season.

-Since taking over general manager duties in 2005, Ted Thompson has vowed to build the team's foundation through the draft. Of the 53 active roster players, 20 have been drafted by Thompson.

-Only Indianapolis enters 2007 with a younger squad. A look at the five youngest teams in the NFL reveals that youth will be no excuse in 2007 - all five teams finished .500 or better in 2006."

This bodes well moving forward if we have another .500 or better season. I think we have a lot of talent in this group as well, not just youth. Of our starters (including kicker and punter), 11 are 25 or younger, 17 are 27 or under. If they can keep this core together and add a few more offensive playmakers, they'll be in good shape.

Team, Average Age
Indianapolis - 26 yrs, 87 days
Green Bay - 26 yrs, 92 days
N.Y. Giants - 26 yrs, 193 days
Dallas - 26 yrs, 193 days
Jacksonville - 26 yrs, 236 days

CB is the only position that really concerns me all that much going forward in terms of age, though I'm very high on both Bush and Blackmon. You can never have enough good CB's these days, and throwing a high round, high talent guy into the mix next year would make a lot of sense.

OT might also be a concern, especially with Cliffy's nagging injury issues. Still, he just turned 31 and Tauscher 30 so they could definitely continue to play for several more seasons. I'm sure TT will continue to pick up a couple of athletic OL prospects in the coming drafts.

I think College could make the transition if and when it comes time to move on from Tausch and Clifton. Maybe by then Coston or Barbrie could play G.

I've been very impressed with Bush and Blackmon. Those two may be the answer when Harris and Woodson are no longer able to play effectively. But you're right; adding a high round pick into the mix is also an option if a guy is available.

Agreed on drafting a DB next year. I think we need either a stud RB or DB in the first next year, assuming there are guys there with comparable talent to overall BPA. Candidates include RB Steve Slaton and DB Antoine Cason from Arizona.

Running back could easily be the deepest position in the draft next year. McFadden, Slaton, Davis, Stewart, Bernard, Rice, Hart, Johnson, Ore, Charles...the depth there is amazing.

Not so much at CB. Jenkins (if he comes out) and Cason. Maybe Justin King and Ikegwuonu.

Unless Slaton or McFadden is there for us, I'd grab the best DB on the board (I'd include Kenny Phillips in there as well) and go RB in the second.

TE could also obviously be a target area.

Phillips is a safety, but it's not like we couldn't use a stud there as well, so I'd agree. Agreed on RB depth.

I love Slaton. He is lightning quick and can cut on a dime in the open field. Decent receiving option as well.

Kind of OT, but you know what I realized while listening to last night's game?

P.Manning
M. Harrison
R. Wayne
D. Clark
J. Addai

All 1st round draft picks.

Sort of goes along with the whole "drafting a playmaker" thing. Do any of you draft gurus know if the guys besides Manning were "reaches", meaning going for need rather than BPA?

They all were drafted right around where they were projected.

We are actually the youngest team in the league again. I believe by 2 days.

On the season opener John Madden said we became the youngest just a couple of days ago...
