LB and TE positions -- what to make of these

Post#1 » by Ayt » Thu Sep 6, 2007 8:48 pm

The lack of depth is glaring. Tracy White would step in as a starter at OLB if either Hawk or Pop got hurt. White, in mind, is a strict ST standout who shouldn't play in the regular unit; a Travis Jervey type guy. Bishop looked good in the preseason, but he also was slow to fill on many running plays and looked like a bit of a liability in coverage. He's not anywhere close to being ready to start.

Bubba looked much improved over last year and I've always liked Lee as a player, but how can we only have 2 TEs on the roster? If one goes down, it really limits your playbook.

I wonder if TT really plans to keep thinks like this all year. You'd think if he were going to fill a spot he would have done so after all the cuts. Perhaps he thinks a trade from a position of strength (DL, CB) is possible in the first few weeks after teams get a feel for what they really have on their rosters.

He's definitely rolling the dice by hording talent in the hopes that a desperate team comes calling in the next few weeks. A Frank Walker or Colin Cole could be a key rotational player for many teams, especially if those teams are hit by an injury or two.

I agree that LB depth is a huge concern, more then any other on defense, 3 excellent starters and then nothing, I don't have any faith in Tracy White to be honest.

I was really impressed with the way Bubba Franks played after game #1, I think he easily outplayed Donald Lee (who i like) and is a much better blocker. Seemed to me Favre was using the preseason to develop a chemistry with the wr's and when he needed to really move the ball he went to Lee and Franks....I think Franks will have a bounce back year. It would be nice to have a 3rd TE, to bad Humphreys got hurt, I heard he worked very hard in the off season...perhaps the new FB can play some TE in an emegency.

Definitely concerns. Bishop looked great against other teams scrubs, he looked like a rookie against Tennessee in a starting role. Anything out of Bubba is a plus, I expect nothing.

Anyone know the status of these free agent LBs? My guess is if there were an injury to a LB we'd look to free agency:

Tommy Polley
Shelton Quarles
Orlando Huff
Peter Sirmon
Ike Reese
Al Singleton
Dexter Coakley
