On the eve of Favre breaking the all-time TD record, I went ahead and just looked at what kind of numbers Marino put up throughout his career. What's really astonishing is how nearly identical his numbers are with Favre, in almost every aspect.

Favre (Regular Season):

61.1% completion/58,361 yards/420 TD/275 INT

Favre (Post-Season):

60.4% completion/4,902 yards/34 TD/26 INT


Marino (Regular Season):

59.4% completion/61,361 yards/420 TD/252 INT

Marino (Post-Season)

56.0% completion/4,510 yards/32 TD/24 INT


Just a couple interesting notes:

1. Favre has exactly 10 less career attempts than Marino does (and actually accomplished the tying TD on his last attempt on Sunday, so 10 attempts faster over the span of 17 seasons)
2. Favre is exactly 3,000 yards away from the all-time yards mark, thus needing to average 230.8 yards per game the remainder of the season to break the mark, something I think is a lock.

Things that put Favre over Marino in my mind:

1. Post season record. Favre is 11-9, Marino is 8-10.

2. SB rings. Favre has one, Marino does not.


It's just amazing how parallel their careers are.

Marino pwns Favre when it comes to Isotoner gloves ad campaigns though.

And Favre still gets shafted in talks of the great QB's.

Sadly many still had marino rated above Favre even though he has had much better weapons through out his career.....

That is going to change once Favre retires. There is no way Marino will be considered a better QB due to Favre breaking all of the important QB records and the fact that Favre has won a Super Bowl. Favre's toughness and durability are legendary as well. All the intangibles go to Favre such as passion for the game and creativity. If Favre had won that second Super Bowl, I believe he would have to be considered greater than Montana. Although, personally I would take Favre over Montana any day.

Not sure I'd say that.

I'd put Sterling Sharpe, Antonio Freeman, Donald Driver and Javon Walker up against Mark Clayton, Mark Duper and Irving Fryar any day. As for rushers, Marino's best was Karim Abdul Jabar. I think he only played with a 1000 yard rusher for one season.

Marino is like Brett in that their GM's made the mistake of not doing their best to put elite talent around them in their primes.

Favre over Montana? Why is that? Did you see Montana play in his prime? You do realize Montana won 4 Super Bowls and had life time 92.3 QB rating?

agreed to a point, only Freeman and Driver of the players listed played with Favre for more than a couple seasons.

also, the fact that Favre has had some good RB's just shows how special he is.

Look at what Green was doing in his prime.....Bennett, Levens, etc...some would argue what the heck we were still doing throwing the ball!

I thought about posting this as a new thread because more people may read it, however it fits perfect here.
