Media Musings - Power Rankings - Week 10

Post#1 » by ReasonablySober » Mon Nov 12, 2007 3:03 pm

Gonna be updating this one throughout the week.

I really can't add much in terms of post-game thoughts. I was driving the entire game from WI back to MN. Once I got to Minni I switched over to Vikings radio. It was around the time the Packers had taken a 27 point lead.

Small slice of heaven, listening to Paul Allen sound like someone ran his dog over. All week I've listened to Vikings radio and their overconfident fans sound off on how they could take on anyone and dominate with their stifling D and powerful ground game. Ha, right...

After the game P.A. called Green Bay "one of the better teams in the NFC". O RLY?

Anyway, he's not really alone. In a lot of minds it's still Dallas and everyone else.

Matt Mosley's Observations

Moments after the Cowboys wrapped up a convincing 31-20 victory over the Giants, Troy Aikman said, "I don't think anyone's in Dallas' class in the NFC."

With all due respect, Aikman might want to secure a tape of the Packers' 34-0 victory over the Vikings before ruling them completely out.

Covenant of the Gridiron

People seem to be waiting for the other shoe to drop on this Packer's season. Yet...I don't see that happening. Week after week they look quite impressive...and that stayed true this week as they absolutley throttled a Vikings team that beat San Diego last week and managed to hold Adrian Peterson to just 45 yards rushing. 296 to 45 is quite the downgrade, wouldn't you say? In victory Favre managed to pass 60,000 career passing yards. The only other Quarterback to have done this is Dan Marino? Quite impressive, Bret. In my opinion, the Packers were looking to make a statement this week given that they were always in close games...so I think they wanted to destroy the Vikings. And they did.

What can be drawn from this? Not a lot, unless you have yet to realize that this Greenbay team is pretty damn good.

About the only kind word I can say about SI's Peter King is that he certainly is a prolific writer. It actually encourages me that he doesn't think much of the Pack yet; if he was sky-high on the Packers I'd be worried. (I wish I could find my copy of his hilarious pre-season ranking of the top 500 [1000?] NFL players to back this up; still looking.) King, for me, is like an amalgam of two "Cheers" characters - postman Cliff's brain for meaningless minutiae inside Norm's body.

As for Dallas getting all the press, well that's no surprise, is it? Year in and year out, you can always count on the national sports media to overhype the Cowboys, Raiders and any New York football team. It's probably best for the Packers that they go into their big Nov. 29 matchup with the Cowboys as an underdog. If they win that game the Pack will get all the respect they deserve.

When the national media talks about the Pack they usually focus on Brett Favre and how good our D is becoming. I think they have failed to widely recognize 3 other important factors to the Packers' success:
1 - the Packers coaches are consistently out-gameplanning their opponents,
2 - a true West Coast team can still thrive without a dominant running game because the short pass is effectively their running game (e.g. the 49ers leading rusher during their first Super Bowl - 1981 - season was Ricky Patton with a whopping 543 yards/3.6 yrd per carry average; also of the 5 years Roger Craig led the 49ers in rushing - '85-89, encompassing two championships - only twice in those 5 years did Craig manage to top 1,000 yards and average 4 yards a carry or better),
3 - the Packers have one of the NFL's premier receiving corps. They may be young and not well known beyond Driver yet, but they will be.

All that being said, I still think the Patriots and Colts are a notch above everybody else this year. But the Packers are young, talented, well-coached and getting better next year...

The odd thing is King is quick to throw praise at individual Packers, Favre especially. He's gushed about Kampman and Harris the last couple weeks. Tauscher too, I believe. But he's been reluctant to put the Packers in the top 3 despite their record and more often than not they're in that 5-6 range.

Anyway, the Colts are great but the last two weeks I've begun to think they might be a bit more vulnerable than I previously believed, mostly due to injuries. Right now they're completely beat to hell.

If Green Bay were to play Indi this week I'd love the Pack's chances.

Is Marvin Harrison still out? As a football fan I would like to see Harrison/Wayne versus Harris/Woodson.

King does laud certain Packers, but usually he's just playing Captain Obvious after the fact. He has no imagination. His current top 4 NFL rankings? Well let's see, there's the winners of the last 3 super bowls (way to go out on a limb, Mr. King) and the Cowboys (see media overhype rule cited above).

On a tangent - how long before Mr. King et al start calling Peyton "6-Pick" Manning a "gunslinger" like Favre? Funny how quickly an elite quarterback resorts to forcing the issue when his receiver corps consists of one legit NFL wideout and some warmed-over arena league fodder - a characterization that could apply to several of Favre's former supporting casts (not this year's, though).

The longer the Packers stay under the radar the better. Detroit losing last week was huge, it's time for them to go into there usual slide. Final record - 14-2. Top NFC seed.

I still blows me away to think the biggest game of the year in the NFC, GB vs Dallas, won't be seen by a large chunk of the country who have cable.

As for the rankings, i can see why many had Dallas ranked ahead of us. Prior to recent games, we had no running game. If we continue being able to run, i think most observers will view us and Dallas as nearly even until that game is played.

ESPN Rankings are Funny
1. Pats
2. Cowboys
3. Colts
4. Packers
5. Steelers

How do the Colts lose 2 in a row and only drop 1 spot.

Stupid analysts. I can't wait for the Packers/Cowboys matchup. Can't stand all those fans, almost worse than Bears fans.
