Kudos to McGinn for as in depth an article as I've ever read on any one game. He really did his homework.
To be honest I really don't remember much about our offense in that game. I don't remember how Favre did our how their blitzing disrupted the passing game. The one lasting memory was how their run game made our defensive front seven look like they didn't even belong on the same field.

Incredible article, extremely interesting and providing multiple sides/angles. The blitzing question is fascinating. "Thats a flat out lie," said Chmura. Great stuff.
Denver beat us down with that win, defense was exhausted. Thats what happens when you abandon the run.
Same happened to the Packers last week. Control the clock versus pass-happy coaches/teams and it is as good a recipe for victory as any.
Of course you could say that in just about any game...but still

I blame Gilbert Brown's poor conditioning for that Super Bowl loss. I remember seeing video of guys on the sideline going up to Gil saying, "Come on Gilbert, we need you man," only to be ignored while he sucked on oxygen. He was key to the run stop and let the whole team down. Also truly believe the Packers under estimated the Broncos completely. Reading that article just opened up old wounds from 10 years ago and two weeks ago. I gotta go suffocate myself now.

Why would you carry only five active D-linemen into the Super Bowl? Of course Gilbert wasn't in condition to play every snap. He's Gilbert Brown for **** sake.
F*** Marc Davis, f*** Tim Donaghy and f*** David Stern as a staff, record label and as a mothaf**kin crew......and if you wanna be down with Stern then F*** YOU TOO!!! Stu Jackson f*** you too.....all you mothaf**kas F*** YOU TOO!!!!

I've heard both Levens and Chumura interviewed about that game a few times. Levens was gashing the Broncos defense and he said he pleaded with the coaches to give him the ball more in the second half, but the pleas were ignored. Chumura also said he asked the coaches to run more and was ignored, along with saying Holmgren was stubborn about keeping backs in to block the blitz.
If i remember correctly, Levens said he went up to Holmgren directly and asked why they aren't running the ball and Holmgren told him told him to shut up and play and leave the play calls to the coaches. While i don't remember everything about the interview with Levens, i do remember there being real anger and frustration in his voice about Holmgren over that game, same with Chewy.

I put a ton of blame on Holmgren simply because he was so distracted to leave GB for the Seattle deal that he wasn't focused. Given how badly Wolf has scorched him here and in the past, it's clear those two didn't get along even back then.
But I can't put this all on the Walrus......Every player to a man took Denver lightly given that the Packers were double digit favorites.....and there were numerous confirmed reports by fans in San Diego who saw Chmura, Favre, Winters, etc out until 4-5am the night before the game in the gaslamp district of San Diego.
If Chewy has complaints, maybe he should have thought about his own game prep actions first. That was a team loss all the way......they thought they had won the title two weeks earlier when they beat SF in SF for the NFC championship.

Save a pillow for me.
The entire game was a mess from the coaches down to the last player. I remember wondering why we refused to run the ball for most of the game. This confirms what I read a few years back when I was reading interviews on how some players were asking the same questions. The part with LeRoy surprised me, but now that I think about it, he was pretty much a non-factor for most of the game. I never saw him in the box.

Sounds terribly familiar.
I think that was the biggest problem. I've heard interviews with Butler and Freeman who basically said they went to the SB to party and thought the game was in the bag. Half the team was probably hungover.

Unless I'm mistaken, Holmgren was also not so secretly campaigning for the Seattle job at the time also. I really think that had something to do with the lack of focus the team had.
Before the NFC championship game the bar I was at was playing Super Bowl 31 and 32 and I realized that I forgot just how awesome Freeman was in 32. Had they won, he would have been the MVP. I think I forget sometimes how good he could be.
