Wide receiver Javon Walker, released by the Denver Broncos on Friday, agreed to a deal with the division-rival Oakland Raiders on Tuesday, a source told ESPN.com's Michael Smith.

The terms of the deal call for Walker to receive a six-year, $55 million contract that includes more than $16 million in guarantees and pays him roughly $27 million over the first three years of the deal.
Soon after being released, at least a third of the league reached out to the six-year veteran.
Injuries limited Walker to eight games last season and he finished with 26 catches for 287 yards and no touchdowns.
He started the season with two 100-yard games before missing two months following a third knee operation.
Beginning his career with the Packers, Walker played two seasons in Denver. He had 69 catches for 1,084 yards and eight TDs the first season. But the offseason was punctuated by tragedy. Involved in a drive-by shooting soon after the season ended, teammate Darrent Williams died in Walker's arms.

It's a lot of money and I still think Al Davis is bat S crazy but I like the signing for the Raiders. A healthy Javo (obviously the big question) opposite Ronald Curry is a solid set of WR's for JaMarcus to work with and now they can focus on defense in the draft. It's too much money but the player fits the need

I wouldn't have shelled out that much cash for Walker, but keep in mind when looking at all these big contracts being handed out, not only has the cap been going up, lots of teams had plenty of cap room.
As with all pro sports, contracts given today can't be overly compared to contracts of the past because the amount of money available goes up and players will get their cut of it.

Too late for hope. Last year was start of salary insanity.

There is a simple reason for it
From 2005 to 2007 the salary cap rose 20% from 85 million in 2005 to 109 million in 2007. Then this year it rose again to 116 million per team.
GM's aren't just losing their minds and handing out huge contracts out of nowhere, they simply have more money to spend and thus players contracts rise roughly with the rate the salary cap going up.

I was listening to an interview on NFL Radio last week, Len Pasquarelli being the guest. He touched on the contracts being given out to free agents, who's giving them, who's not, and why.
Personally, I know little about which teams are bringing in the serious cash. Washington and Dallas are at the top of the list, but I don't really know why. Len discussed this and I wish I would have had a chance to call in and ask more about the subject, because I found it fascinating. He said that the teams you're seeing giving out these huge contracts are the ones with owners and stadiums and TV deals that basically allow them to finance the deals out of pocket. That despite the cap and a seemingly equal playing field, some teams can operate as if there's no cap at all, while others really can't, despite cap room. He specifically mentioned teams like Green Bay and Pittsburgh in this category.
I found it very interesting and I'm going to try and get in touch with him to see if he can offer any further insight.

Good point DB.
I annoys me to no end when people say the Packers should spend because they have cap space, or unused cap space is wasted cap space. Don't they understand that the contracts are real dollars and not just cap space? Those dollars are needed to upgrade stadiums, purchase homes to make parking lots, pay top executives, pay bonuses, etc. Team in larger markets still have the potential ability to generate more cash, thus have more to throw around.
