Glad we didn't draft...

Vernon Davis instead of Hawk. Of course I did on my fantasy team, so I'm screwed. 5 catches in 4 games.
Strange, though. I remember a good amount of people (I think even the majority) were for drafting him over Hawk--but are his troubles because of Martz's offense more than anything? Plus he's been acting kind of bizarre lately, just a blip or a trend?
Basically I'm fishing for FF advice here as well, cause I need some production from my TE, but the guy is just too naturally talented to ditch for a mediocre guy, right??
I was always a little suspicious of him from his one good year in college thats it, but I confess I neverthought he'd become a complete afterthought, especially in an offense with receivers like the 49ers...

Well he is the 31st rated TE in my PPC league and 29th in my classic scoring league. So basically he sucks so far. I would immediately pick up anyone who you like in the top 15 that is available and drop your worst player. I would probably just drop Vernon myself cause anyone who picks him up would be crazy anyway. If you are worried he will break out all of a sudden, drop someone else and keep him another week or two to be sure. I will say this though, normally if the hyped up player doesn't perform in the first 4 weeks, in my experience they will almost always suck the whole season. A decent sleeper pick right now is John Carlson btw but if you can get someone more proven, obviously go with them.

What amazes me is that he wasn't even just a physical freak. He was an outstanding target at Maryland and showed that he could make all the tough catches both across the middle, along the sidelines and up the seams. I still think he'll be a player, but I can't believe he isn't force fed the ball the way TO is.
As for an underrated TE, Fasano has been a nice pickup for me.

I'm sure it has a lot to do with the awful quarterbacking they have in SF. I would still take Davis as a player over much of our talent at TE, but I didn't question the pick of Hawk.

sometimes you need brains to go with all that ability.

That's funny--he's the guy I'm also considering, but with Martin there also, I wonder if he's worth it over Davis...
Thanks for the advice guys...I still wonder if he's not getting thrown to in the system or if he just doesn't warrant it (wrong patterns, attitude, etc.)

I remember clearly that many felt the same as I which was = while appreciating Davis, I/many were for trading pick or taking Hawk. DB is the only one I remember strongly contemplating Davis.

Heath Miller has sucked for me. I picked up Fasano today actually so I agree with DB.

The amazing thing is I'd still consider a straight trade of Davis for Hawk. While Vernon has only shown the (very) occasional flash of brilliance, Hawk's been incredibly unspectacular. If you're taking a linebacker in the top ten you should hope he becomes Ray Lewis or Brian Urlacher or Derrick Brooks. Hawk's been 'just a guy'. Davis hasn't done anything, but I've seen enough to make me think there's a lot of untapped potential and with the right QB and the right system he could be dominant.
I still remember a play against the Packers his rookie year in which he shrugged off a DB and outran another for a massive gain.

I will give AJ Hawk the benefit of the new D-Coordinator next year before I judge to harshly, say what you want but if Hawk played for Monte Kiffin or Jim Johnson he would be jumping off the page. I can't think of one outside backer that has jumped off the page playing in the Sanders/Bates defense.

I read davis' non-production is more a result of the San fran system. they like the way he blocks, so they have him blocking more and running fewer routes. because o'sullivan has been sacked so often, they are keeping davis back to help out with the pass protection. I guess you could blame the SF tackle or fullback for his lack of production.
I also had Davis on one of my fantasy teams. I picked up fasano and the TE from Carolina - Rosario. I dropped Rosario when smith came back. A guy worth watching and who looks to improve is the jet's rookie keller. he hooked up with favre very well in the preseason and it has carried over. he's getting more balls thrown his way than baker is, and he's scored a couple of Tds already. you know with favre, the jets are going to throw and run a short pass offense. cotchery and coles should also have nice years.

I worry about Keller as well though Major, although I'm hearing the same buzz, just because simply there's two other competent tight ends there as well. Same kind of thing that makes me nervous about Fasano (although just Martin there).
I remember more than DB wanting Davis. At the very least I remember alot of people who thought drafting Hawk would be a big mistake.
And who knows still with Davis?
Could be right though, Eagle, now that you mention it I do remember some peopel that wanted to trade down? I believe.

I remember saying that if Davis wasn't on the Packers roster then they should deal down. That LB class was loaded with Hawk, Greenway, Ryans, McIntosh, Simms and Howard.

Yes I recall that also. You were pretty stoked about Davis but you did point to the depth of LB candidates available that could be had later that could be as good as Hawk.

I can't remember where I read it, but I read some quotes from Martz and the Offensive Coordinator that said that they are going to make Vernon Davis a blocking TE until further notice. They said he will have little production this year in catching but they were interested in his blocking ability.
I didn't draft him in one league and if he's on your team I would drop him immediately and not even think twice about it.
If Bo Scaife or Zach Miller is available I would grab him.
